From being lifelong friends to building a successful Nu Skin business that would last them a lifetime and beyond, Thomas and Deon have cracked the taboo that mixing business with friendship would sour the relationship. Despite having polar personalities, Thomas possesses a greater sensitivity to the feelings of others while Deon takes a more logical approach in his dealings, their strengths fit together seamlessly to create a formidable partnership that has taken them from peak to peak.
“We’ve known each other for more than 40 years since our days in National Service,” Deon disclosed. “After that, we pursued our own career paths before coming together to start a business marketing heavy construction machinery. Then in 2000, we were approached about Nu Skin. We wanted to just be product users as the products work for us. But after studying the Nu Skin business plan and the company’s philosophy, we decided that this business model is what we are looking for to achieve financial and time freedom. Furthermore, what we’ve built in Nu Skin can be passed down to our children.”
Switching from marketing heavy machinery to the direct sales of personal care products and health supplements is a dramatic change for Thomas and Deon. Coming from technical engineering background, their learning curve was steep but they persisted and overcame the teething struggles through continuous learning. “We had very little experience and the Nu Skin way is so different from our traditional business. In our traditional business, we kept everything to ourselves; we don’t share our knowledge, business contacts, and networks. But in Nu Skin, the more we share, the more we help other people succeed, we become successful as well,” Thomas shared.
To them, the Nu Skin business is a level playing ground where past credentials and intelligence accounts for little. Having a positive mindset, humility to learn and having clear goals are the engines to keep going in this business. Thomas added, “A lot of people are easily discouraged because they focus on the problems and the level of difficulty to accomplish something. However, to survive in today’s times, nothing is easy anymore. We are born to solve problems!”
The motivation driving Thomas and Deon to constantly do well is their families. Both of them are married with two children each.
