Joseph Cheung, Janet Cheung and Philip Cheung have been running Nu Skin business for nearly 30 years. When Nu Skin has yet opened its Hong Kong market, three of them have already met this company in Canada. Recognizing the development potential of direct selling industry, Joseph & Janet returned to Hong Kong and started their Nu Skin business full-time. Not only did they become the veteran leaders of Nu Skin Hong Kong market but also honored as the Circle of Excellence IV on the 30th anniversary of Nu Skin Hong Kong and Macau.
Joseph, Janet and Philip immigrated to Canada in the early years, and their local business had been on track for long. Joseph had a promising career as an architect, Janet, on the other hand, worked in a large telecommunications company and earned a stable income. While Philip already running a fashion merchandizing business. What made Joseph & Janet come back to Hong Kong to explore the unknown? "I've been in a variety of jobs, such as teacher, merchandiser and secretary, but I still feel that these jobs are dull and lacks challenges," Janet said. "Only Nu Skin can give me the satisfaction and ideal lifestyle that money can't. Joseph added, “In the past, people had no idea about what direct selling is. But driven by curiosity, I wanted to break the misunderstanding by myself. Therefore, I attended Nu Skin's business seminar to learn more about it. I found that the company’s global opportunity platform was a rare and commendable opportunity for development, so I decided to spend a year trying it. After the first year of trials, my confidence in Nu Skin grew and I decided to return to Hong Kong with my wife to start our own business wholeheartedly.”
Rally together and Solve Problems with One Heart
As a man of far sight, Joseph decided to go to Taiwan to develop new market soon after he returned to Hong Kong, while Janet stayed in Hong Kong to take care of the local market. Unfortunately, both Hong Kong and Taiwan markets are in the initial stage, and they have no predecessors to learn from. Lacking sales experience, Janet was unable to support the Hong Kong market alone and she lost almost 80% of the business partners. With insurmountable cultural and language barriers, Joseph’s development in Taiwan was also not as good as expected. Finally, Joseph decided to leave Taiwan temporarily and return to Hong Kong to reformulate strategies with Janet. Unity is strength. The couples make a formidable combination and put their focus back to Hong Kong to consolidate the team’s foundation. The team soon thrived again and until now, they even have partners in many different markets. “Business is all about trade-offs. Although we gave up Taiwan market, we never thought of giving up Nu Skin. “Looking back on the decision of staying in Taiwan for a half year, Joseph had no regrets. Instead, he regarded it as a valuable lesson to share with his partners when they face similar situations.
From ordinary white collars to successful entrepreneurs, the couple complements each other with their strengths and has established a unique business philosophy with both “hard” and “soft” tactics. “Soft”refers to the ‘soft skills ‘that I am responsible for developing, such as expanding network, managing interpersonal relationships and sharing experience with partners, while ‘hard’refers to the ‘hardware for operation’ that Janet takes care of, such as managing the workshop and providing supporting facilities for partners to display products and explain business opportunities with high proficiency. “Joseph explained. While Philip stayed at Canada, concentrating on international business development. Understood that different markets own its unique culture, Philip chose to dissolve the barriers with sincerity. When asked about their advice to the new partners, Philip thinks it’s important to let them understand and believe that Nu Skin can lead them to an autonomous life, so they will not give up easily. Janet expressed, “It is certain that of that you make mistakes and do poorly when you first started your business. Taking more time to feel the power of the products, delve into the science behind, experience the company’s Force for Good culture and realize what you want to achieve will greatly strengthen your confidence in the Nu Skin’s business. As long as you keep trying and learning, you will find your own shortcomings. Then, be courageous to review and improve, and you will definitely find the right way. I remembered that there is a partner who had hit the brick wall repeatedly when he first developed his business, but he kept improving himself and now he has been promoted to the Circle of Excellence IV.”Joseph also used “gold medalist” as metaphor, “Running Nu Skin business is like training for athletes.
