Bringing Hope to Children in Colombia

In February 2018, a group of twenty-five local NTC Ambassadors and donors visited Wayuu children from the Village of Kaimaran La Guajira and donated 1000 bags of VitaMeal and 400 school backpacks in celebration of the Nourish the Children (NTC) three-year anniversary program in La Guajira, Colombia.

NTC has donated 12,000 bags each year since 2015 to the Wayuu Arurayuu Association, which distributes the bags monthly to different villages and education centers in La Guajira, Wayuu territory.

Felix Montiel, Program Coordinator for the Wayuu Araurayu Association, said, “Children in this area have the highest mortality rate in the nation due to malnutrition. For some Wayuu children, the VitaMeal school lunch will be the only meal they will receive that day.  These VitaMeal donations are saving our children and increasing school attendance!”

Wayuu children gathered from seven different villages in the Kaimaran school center and received the Nu Skin delegation with American, Colombian, Wayuu and Nu Skin Flags. Children performed traditional dances to honor their donors and were happy to receive their VitaMeal meal along with back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies.

Convoy of Hope Story

Helping Families Around The World

Ella May lives in a house made of bamboo and other materials easily found in the area. Ella’s parents make less than 250 pesos ($15) a day, and though most of their hard earned money is spent on food and their children’s education, the amount they earn is not enough for the family of eight.

Not all the children were able to eat each day and Ella, being the oldest, would often skip more meals so that her siblings could eat. Ella began to lose weight and fall behind in her class because she wasn’t getting enough food. Thankfully, Ella May and her siblings were recently enrolled in a feeding program at her school where they serve VitaMeal. After eating VitaMeal for several weeks she started to look healthier and participate in class more.

She is one of the prime examples of how proper, regular nutrition from food like VitaMeal can make a huge difference in the lives of the children. Since enrolling in the program, Ella May has become a lot healthier, happier and optimistic about the future. Her dream is to become a fashion designer and make beautiful dresses and provide enough for her family.

With your continued support, her dream might just become a reality. Ella May is thankful for the generous donations that help her and her siblings.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Wang)

Emma is eight years old and shares a small house with her parents, two siblings and grandmother in El Salvador. Recently, times have been tough. Her father has struggled to find permanent work and couldn’t always provide enough food, so Emma and her family would often go hungry.

Recently, Emma was enrolled into the Children’s Feeding Initiative, a program provided by Convoy of Hope, one of Nourish the Children’s charity partners. Emma now receives VitaMeal during school, which has drastically changed her life. Not only does VitaMeal fill her stomach, but it alleviates some of the financial stress on her family.

Emma has big dreams for the future. “I want to be a nurse so I can help other people,” she says. Because of the kindness of VitaMeal donors, Emma can dream of her future with hope that she can make it happen. Please continue to purchase and donate to help children like Emma.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Silvia)

Five-year-old Hannah Banda, wakes up every morning and hurries to school to eat VitaMeal porridge for breakfast with her friends. Alice Loya, Hannah’s mother, said “Life is challenging for our family. We often don't have enough money for food, and my children sometimes go hungry. I remember taking one of my daughters to the hospital, seeking medical attention because she was so malnourished. One day I was told my kids could get a free nutritious meals if they went to school, so I enrolled them as soon as possible.”

Since being enrolled, all of Alice's children are looking beautiful and healthy thanks to the VitaMeal. In 2010, Feed the Children introduced VitaMeal at Chibwata’s Child Based Care Center (CBCC), to encourage parents to send their children to school for an education and a nutritious meal. Because of the partnership, enrollment at the CBCC has increased from 30 to 185 pupils, and more children are receiving a healthy meal and an education.

For most of her life, An Ruoya’s parents have struggled to make ends meet while living in China. Ruoya had to live with her grandparents who also struggled financially. Sadly, because of the low income of her hard-working parents and the poor health of her grandparents, Ruoya didn’t receive nutritional meals and would often go hungry. With the lack of nourishment, Ruoya was shorter and thinner than most of her peers and looked ill most of the time. As she went to school, she fell behind in her studies.

Recently, VitaMeal became available to the Sunshine Primary School, providing sufficient nutrition for Ruoya and other children in need. After having VitaMeal for several months, Ruoya has grown taller and looks healthier and more radiant. Not only is she looking better but she has improved in her academic performance and is getting nearly full marks in each subject. Recently, she placed first in Zanhuang County for academia.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Silvia)

Silvia is 12 years old and has been eating VitaMeal since the age of five at a community center in Amatitan, El Salvador. Before having regular meals of VitaMeal, Silvia struggled to find something to eat every day and often went to bed hungry. The main staple of food for her family was tortillas with beans or eggs, when available. “My life is different now because in the community center I eat delicious food, and I know it has helped me to be strong,” Silvia said.

The young girl, who likes to jump rope and sew clothes for her dolls from old pieces of cloth, is now at a healthy weight and height for her age. Her parents credit her good health to Nu Skin’s Nourish the Children initiative and its charity partner, Feed the Children, for providing VitaMeal at the community center. Without this support, her parents believe her growth and development might have drastically suffered. “My life has changed because my child has the opportunity to eat healthy, and that is something that I couldn’t provide by myself,” Silvia’s mother said.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Karla)

Seven-year-old Karla lives with her parents in Cofradia, Estelí, Nicaragua. She suffered from malnutrition from being fed only one meal a day until she was offered VitaMeal at her school. Shortly thereafter, Karla’s family started to receive supplemental support of VitaMeal. Her family noticed that her charismatic, friendly and cheerful disposition improved with the increased nutrients and vitamins she was eating from VitaMeal. Her stamina and endurance also increased and now she spends that extra energy playing with her plastic tea set and dolls.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Patricia)

Patricia Mateyu is an orphan who attends the Namalalanje nursery in Thyolo, Malawi. She walked to the community-based childcare center every day on an empty stomach because her poor, elderly grandparents who care for her couldn’t afford to feed her. When she first began attending the center, Patricia weighed in at only 33 pounds, which was the lowest weight among 80 of her peers at the nursery. After eating VitaMeal each day, Patricia’s weight increased to 40 pounds in just five months. The healthy weight gain has helped Patricia with increased energy and alertness, and she is thriving now with a bright future ahead of her.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Gertrude)

Four-year-old Gertrude Mwembele from the Machinga district in Malawi is a child whose life was once in jeopardy. She lost both of her parents when she was only two, and lives in a country where regular, nutritious food is not easy to come by in the best of circumstances. However, thanks to VitaMeal and Nu Skin’s Nourish the Children initiative, Gertrude is now eating nourishing meals every day. She has gained weight and has grown a few inches. Gertrude is attending school with 132 other children, who also receive VitaMeal. Her future is now filled with hope and promise.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Jay-R)

Jay-R was born with a backbone problem, which caused him to stand improperly. While Jay-R’s parents had to spend much of their time working on their small family farm, they soon realized they needed to focus full-time on his care.  The parents struggled to meet his nutritional needs and worried about their son’s weight loss.  Working with NTC initiative charity partner, Feed the Children, Jay-R joined a VitaMeal feeding program and gained nearly four pounds in three months.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Shijing & Shilin)

During a cold winter in 2008, twin infant brothers named Shijing and Shilin were found abandoned in rural China. The woman who found them, known as Aunt Wang, is 64 years-old and has adopted more than 30 children. To support this large family, Aunt Wang serves VitaMeal every day to her children. She is grateful for the kind donations of VitaMeal and is very proud of her boys.

“Look at the recognition my boys have received for their efforts in school,” said Aunt Wang pointing proudly to a wall filled with awards. “Thank you Nu Skin.”

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Moses)

Meet three-year-old Moses. He participates in the Mwaiwathu Community-Based Childcare Center (CBCC) in Machinga, Eastern Malawi. When he started eating VitaMeal, he began improving so much that those around him were relieved and wanted to know more about VitaMeal and the Nourish the Children initiative. Moses is now energetic and loves to play soccer with his friends and anyone who is willing to take the challenge. His health has improved and he has almost doubled his weight. When he grows up, he would like to be a doctor and give children hope for a better life.

Nourish the Children – Vitameal Recipient (Emma)

Nu Skin received communication from Christine Dallakian, an Armenian mother who received assistance through the Nourish the Children (NTC) initiative. When her husband passed away in 2009, she was left alone to care for Emma. In May, Christine heard about VitaMeal and NTC and knew she needed to find out more about the opportunity to properly nourish little Emma. The Dallakians are two of hundreds who received assistance in Armenia and were nourished thanks to the donations of Nu Skin sales leaders, customers and employees.

Christine writes: “Today we received VitaMeal and little Emma was very

glad to get it. While I was writing this letter, my daughter was laboriously

preparing VitaMeal in the kitchen and now is calling me to taste it. We

                                                         really love it!”

Nu Skin is a for-profit distributor of nutritional and skin care products and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NUS). Nourish the Children is an initiative of Nu Skin and is registered in some states as a commercial co-venture. The initiative enables Nu Skin’s distributors and customers to purchase VitaMeal from Nu Skin and donate it to charitable organizations to help solve the complex world problem of feeding malnourished children. The price of VitaMeal includes the cost of manufacturing, general overhead, distribution and sales. As is the case with other Nu Skin products, distributors are paid commissions and Nu Skin earns a profit margin from each sale of VitaMeal, which is lower than the profit margin on virtually all of Nu Skin’s other products.
