Love for Family and Helping Others Leads to Success and Happiness

Nu Skin Million Dollar Circle Members[i] Liang Hong Dong and Wu Mao Chao believe their happiness is a result of helping others pursue their dreams. They traveled different routes prior to building their highly successful Nu Skin business, and they faced obstacles that nearly made them give up at one point. However, motivated by deep love and respect for family members, they persisted.

The couple met at Guangzhou University. Wu Mao Chao was a gifted student who entered college at age 15 and earned his master’s degree at age 22. Liang Hong Dong was recruited to be one of Procter & Gamble’s first trainees soon after graduating. She was promoted rapidly, eventually becoming South China Sales Director of the Gillette Company, heading an important division.

Although Liang Hong Dong was doing well in her job, she soon realized that it did not give her the lifestyle and financial and time freedom she wanted so she could demonstrate filial devotion to her parents—especially her father whom she viewed as her role model and idol. Liang Hong Dong’s father was a high-ranking government official in Guangzhou City and was honored with the title of National Model Labor. At home he had been an affectionate father who stitched and mended his children’s winter quilts. Liang Hong Dong had always wanted to be like her father and help many people as a respected member of the community.

Resetting Her Orientation

“In the process of pursuing success, I forgot about the dreams from my childhood,” says Liang Hong Dong. “I asked myself, ‘Can I support my parents so they can enjoy a healthy and happy life in their old age?’” By asking herself this question, Liang Hong Dong decided to “reset the orientation of her life.” After a friend introduced them to the company, she and Wu Mao Chao made the decision to devote full-time effort to building a Nu Skin business. They felt Nu Skin was a company they could trust and, most important, believed Nu Skin’s corporate philosophies perfectly matched their own values.

The couple did very well in the beginning, and then several unexpected problems surfaced one after another. These setbacks made Liang Hong Dong consider giving up, especially when she was offered a good salary to take a new corporate position. But she remembered her original intention of joining Nu Skin so she could provide her family with a better quality of life and help her business partners reach their goals. In addition, Wu Mao Chao enjoyed working as a Nu Skin distributor. “It was my dreams, responsibilities and love that made me persist and continue to move forward,” says Liang Hong Dong. She turned down the job offer and kept her vision of success clearly in sight, and with Wu Mao Chao, eventually became a Team Elite Executive and Million Dollar Circle Member.

Self-Motivation Means Power

Liang Hong Dong believes she has changed a great deal when it comes to her attitude and perspective about life. Through Nu Skin, she has learned to treat people fairly and help them achieve their goals. Wu Mao Chao says he had a conservative personality prior to joining Nu Skin, and lacked the confidence to express himself well. Plus, he tended to dodge problems instead of facing them. “At Nu Skin, you have to face your weaknesses honestly,” he says. Because of this, Wu Mao Chao feels he has improved significantly in terms of action and execution. The couple also feels that Nu Skin forces people to be self-motivators. “You have to constantly challenge yourself in order to gain the opportunity for self-growth,” they say. “Nu Skin makes distributors see themselves in a way they could never imagine before, and makes them form a habit of always thinking, ‘I’ve got to be better.’ Self-motivation means power … a self-motivated person can fulfill his or her own goals in every aspect of life.”

Wu Mao Chao feels that Nu Skin gives people the opportunity to reach their personal dreams as well as develop a sense of altruism. He and Liang Hong Dong believe if distributors open their minds, are good-hearted, and work at becoming better people who are willing to help others, they can become successful. They love the fact that many of their business partners have dreams that go far beyond their own personal interests. Some want to help support artists and others want to assist 10,000 dropout children go back to school through the Spring Wind Study Program. This determination to make a difference has touched a deep chord within Wu Mao Chao and Liang Hong Dong. “Our partners have repeatedly inspired us with their dreams and made us pursue our own dreams,” says Wu Mao Chao.

Liang Hong Dong and Wu Mao Chao plan to keep building their business by sharing Nu Skin’s integrity and vision with others. And through their efforts, they hope to help future generations benefit from the company’s life-changing force for good culture.
