Through hard work, perseverance, and a strong belief that they could be successful, Guo Pei Hua and Li Yang Ming built a thriving Nu Skin business that has rewarded them handsomely over the years. In addition to qualifying as Team Elite executives for three years, they also became Million Dollar Circle members[i]. They are proud of these accomplishments, and when their son asked if he could become a Team Elite executive when he joined Nu Skin, they explained he could only receive this title and its many accompanying rewards if he learned how to help others. That’s because Guo Pei Hua and Li Yang Ming have learned that loving others and helping them fulfill their dreams are what brought them the most happiness.
Guo Pei Hua and Li Yang Ming were both high-ranking managers with good incomes and a respected social status among their peers prior to joining Nu Skin. Even though they were doing well professionally, they knew hard work would only bring them a high position, and not necessarily future financial freedom. Not yet married, they both put in many hours of overtime, which made it difficult for them to see one another. This, coupled with their demanding jobs, added stress to their lives and made them doubt even more what kind of future they would have.
The couple was initially introduced to direct selling by Guo Pei Hua’s younger sister, who repeatedly asked Guo Pei Hua to join her in her business she was associated with at the time. Li Yang Ming encouraged Guo Pei Hua to explore what her sister was doing, since he felt people should not set limits on things they don’t understand. After learning more about direct selling and Nu Skin, Guo Pei Hua decided to join the Nu Skin business. Li Yang Ming and Guo Pei Hua got married and jumped into building their Nu Skin business full-time.
Their Persistence Kept Them Moving Forward
Guo Pei Hua and Li Yang Ming faced a number of challenges when they started their business. Li Yang Ming’s conservative parents were very opposed to their decision to join Nu Skin. The couple had used up their savings and were struggling financially, and they had to deal with the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) that affected everyone in their country at the time. In addition, policy adjustments that Nu Skin made affected their business. Guo Pei Hua gave birth to their son soon after they began their business, and they were concerned about their inability to spend as much time with him as they wanted. Plus, they didn't receive any support from their families. All of this stress also put a strain on their relationship, but they had vowed at the start of their life together to work through any problems that surfaced, so they kept both their marriage and their business intact.
Guo Pei Hua knew how important it was for her and Li Yang Ming to be persistent in their actions. She always kept her reasons for wanting to be successful foremost in her mind, and this enabled her to continue moving forward and not to give up—no matter what challenges they faced. For example, when they traveled to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, with their mentors, Chen Xiu Cai and Liang Fang, to build their business in that region, they had difficulty getting people to attend their meetings. They called people from public phone booths, but had no luck generating interest from anyone in learning about Nu Skin. This situation was so frustrating for them, it made them cry. Guo Pei Hua remembers sitting on the curb together, looking at people passing by, and saying to each other, "This guy might become our business partner. That guy might want to join our team." However, thanks to the support of their mentors, they never lost confidence in themselves or their dreams because they knew that encountering difficulties was temporary and part of the process.
Focusing on Others’ Interests Instead of their Own
Eventually, these “dark days” passed, and with their struggles behind them, they reached Team Elite executive status. As they began to enjoy time and financial freedom, they focused on helping others enrich their lives through Nu Skin’s products and business model. Now when they share Nu Skin with people, they concentrate on others’ interests instead of their own.
Li Yang Ming says their Nu Skin business has helped him progress on a personal level. He says he was a very negative and passive person prior to joining Nu Skin, and he never saw the goodness in the people he met. He was also very quiet and did not express his opinions to his family. When his older sister showed a video of him on stage speaking before a large crowd, his mother could not believe it. “After these years in this business, I am really happy now,” says Li Yang Ming. “My thinking has totally changed.”
Today, Guo Pei Hua and Li Yang Ming enjoy seeing their business partners celebrate their accomplishments on stage. Their goal is to help more people discover and fulfill their dreams as they pursue common goals and continue to work together as a force for good throughout the world.
