"I really feel like I’m making a change in other people’s lives.”
Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Joan Akita now calls Orange County, California home. But it was her Hawaiian roots that led Joan to the Nu Skin world as a distributor.
Joan credits a phone call from Team Elite member and friend of 26 years Alan Negao as a moment that changed the direction of her life and got her started in Nu Skin.
“He said, ‘I want to show you this Galvanic Spa,’” She said. “I knew that he had a really good head for business, so I wanted to take a look at it.”
Joan, who has now been with Nu Skin for two years, was working in the mortgage field at the time of the phone call from Negao but had just been laid off of her job of seven and a half years and she was looking for a change of pace in her life.
Joan has always been the kind of person who recognizes an opportunity for what it was and after hearing of the Nu Skin opportunity, she realized that she had been introduced to an exciting and new opportunity.
“I got into real estate back in the late 80’s because I understood that was an opportunity,” she said. “I got into mortgages in the late 90’s because of the opportunities there.”
Staying true to form, Joan recognized Nu Skin’s success in the healthy living and looking world and decided to take the opportunity.
“The stars are in alignment with this company,” she said. “You couldn’t ask for anything better.”
The unique business model of network marketing that allows people to earn reoccurring income was something that set Nu Skin apart from other companies and jobs that Joan had been a part of in the past.
“When I did mortgages and real estate it was transactional income, it was not repeat,” she added. “It was not leveraged income, which is very very different.”
Joan’s beliefs in personal development are what have made her successful over her years and years of working experience. She feels that making a decision and acting upon that decision will help anyone achieve eventual success in the business world and in the Nu Skin opportunity.
“You have to make that decision that you want to do it, and once you make that decision you have to commit to that decision,” she said.
Shortly after signing up as a Nu Skin distributor, Joan decided to make the decision for herself and take action that would lead to achieving her goals. She attended the Kick-Off Meetings and noticed the reserved seating for Blue Diamond and Team Elite Executives of the company.
After the meetings had concluded, she walked up to the reserved seating and noticed Blue Diamond signs that clarified the reserved Blue Diamond section.
“I took the sign home and I put my name on it,” she said. “I put it up on my computer and that was the visual for me that I saw every day. I made a decision and I just constantly took action for it.”
Joan feels that her life has changed for the better since joining Nu Skin and feels that she has been blessed by being able to be around the many wonderful people that she has a chance to come in contact with daily.
“I have more fulfillment and more excitement in my life,” she said. "I really feel like I’m making a change in other people’s lives.”
Her advice to others is to have the will to work hard at the business.
“You have to be willing to work at it,” she said. “It is a business for people that are willing to work and really willing to put in the sweat equity and have a long-term vision.”
