From trust and sincerity, work in the name of good
From university classmates to lifelong partners, and then becoming colleagues at work, Andrew Lam and his wife, Maggie So, have been together for thirty-five years. Andrew says, “Nu Skin has taken my career to new heights and elevated my marriage by giving us common topics and goals.” Their team has achieved outstanding results in the past years, and both of them point to the same simple motto for their achievement: Success is the product of a sincere heart.
Before operating Nu Skin business, Andrew worked at one of Hong Kong’s largest corporate groups for almost 20 years. Starting off with human resources manager, he advanced through the ranks to director of the group’s HR department. But behind the glory, it also felt as if it was the end of his career path, where there was no more goals to work for and no way forward. To secure his position, so as to protect himself, he had to put on a figurative “mask”, and Maggie felt that her husband’s humor and motivation fading away. Andrew coincidentally came across Nu Skin’s products and business opportunity in an observation, which later opened him a way to better future.
A new chapter from “Force for Good”
Andrew admits that he had doubts about Nu Skin at first. “One day I came home from work and saw that my wife left a bunch of products on our bed. She told me that she bought some Nu Skin products from a friend. I wasn’t familiar with direct selling at the time, but it aroused my concern that my wife may have fallen as a victim to a scam.” Being decisive, he promptly urged Maggie to walk away, but having found the products to be effective, Maggie did not give up. Instead, she decided to dig deeper into the opportunities behind the products. She was invited to a Nu Skin talk and learned about “Force for Good”, one of the core values in Nu Skin, that is to operate a business while helping more people. She was deeply moved by the commitment to do good, the smiles and positive energy shown on her peers gave that extra push to establish her determination in inviting her husband to join as a business partner.
His wife’s commitment to career soften Andrew’s opposition towards Nu Skin. Out of curiosity and a desire to learn more about his wife’s work, he began to research on the technology behind the products and analyzed the details in the annual report, which provide him with a general understanding of the company’s operations. He later accompanied Maggie to the US to attend the Global Convention, recalling that the first thing Nu Skin mentioned was neither business performance nor products, but its charity work. Nu Skin’s culture and mission of “Force for Good” left Andrew with a deep impression, at the same time, he learned more about Nu Skin’s enormous future marketing plans and growth potential. After careful consideration, he decided to seize the opportunity and joined Maggie in pursuing a new career.
With extensive working experience, Andrew learned the importance of having clear goal, and laid a solid foundation for his success. He and Maggie led his team to enter the Greater China market, and built an outstanding professional team based on the people-oriented principle of “the right people for the right job”.
Perfect partnership of 1+1>2
From home to workplace, what is the secret behind Andrew and Maggie’s perfect partnership? While the two joke that their personalities are polar opposites, it is their differences that allow them to complement each other in their Nu Skin career and form a perfect partnership. “Although our personalities are very different, the two of us fights for everything together since schooldays, whether it’s for family or career. He’s logical and analytic, whereas I’m more sentimental in nature. Therefore, at home, we keep our lives well in order with him being in charge of the major issues, while I take care of the daily hassles; As in a team, he is the “grand marshal” who sets the overall plan and strategy, I, on the other hand, play the part of “lubricant” between team members and provide counsel on communication and interaction within the team,” says Maggie. The couple’s complementary nature has had a “1+1>2” effect on both work and life.
As to the most unforgettable moment in their Nu Skin career, Maggie looks back to the establishment days of their team, which also happened to be the SARS crisis. “When SARS broke out in 2003, fear overwhelmed the city, but we have commitment with our partners. We still continued with our weekly training seminars despite the odds.” Their courage and effort established a solid foundation for the team and nurtured a group of independent and self-motivated team members, while their kindness has also rubbed off their partners. Once, they attended a convention of The NU SKIN Greater China Children Heart Fund as trustees of “Force for Good”. The happy smiles of funded children who suffer from congenital heart disease brought tears to their eyes. They know their hard work has borne fruit. They have touched the lives of their partners, who have gone on to touch more lives, and this was a great motivating factor for them to further develop their team.
Injecting young talent
Andrew explains his motto, “success is the product of a sincere heart”, as follows: “In order to succeed, you have to be a sincere person who treats the society and the career in a sincere manner.” Today, Andrew and Maggie continue to hold regular group meetings every Saturday, sharing their business knowledge with their partners and learning from each other. Looking forward to the future, Andrew believes that the key to success is the support of the younger generation. With the rise of social media, those who convince the younger generation to believe in and love their products will have the potential to unlock a group with unimaginable spending power. “The younger generation is the future of Nu Skin. Therefore, we also adjust accordingly and actively take in more youngsters in our team,” he says.
Andrew also advises his young partners to continuously improve themselves, in order to go further. Andrew believes that knowledge is power and this belief has tasked himself to read a book every 7 days since the age of 30. “Reading brings you into contact with knowledge in a variety of fields, and keep in touch with the ever-changing world. It also develops your ability to think independently.”
Maggie, as a firm believer in work-life balance, highlights the importance of family life and urges her partners to do the same. She suggests to reserve Sunday for family and only schedule work from Monday to Saturday.
Many people do not truly know what they want in life. With a son and a daughter, Andrew and Maggie both feel that the most important thing in life is the happiness that comes from helping others. Through the Nu Skin platform, they have found their own happiness and made that one of the most important values they treasure and inherit.
