Insights into People’s Hearts

Janet Yao’s success in Nu Skin business proves the importance of a clear mind in treating other people for gaining achievements with the team. She carefully studied the mentality of Japanese people, eliminated the cultural difference at work and explored the Japanese market successfully. She also learned to observe partners ’attitudes and cultivate the right people for her team. All these experiences have explained that the best way to build a business is to understand people.

20 years ago, a business partner who lived in Vancouver introduced Nu Skin to Janet. With her strong research spirit, Janet became very interested in the business after reading the information provided by the business partners and was eager to know more about it. Through repeated investigations, Janet realized the real advantages of Nu Skin business.“The commission of Nu Skin is impressive and the excellent products can indeed benefit the users. It also meets people’s needs to be healthy and young, which will definitely bring great business opportunities. Moreover, since the direct selling platform reaches many countries, you could develop an international business. If you can establish an extensive international network, you could possibly receive impressive commission. What attracted me the most, however, is Nu Skin’s respect towards people. Being a business partner, we have to understand our consumers and our partners in order to be successful, and this also helps us to become outstanding leaders. Regarding this, I have also noticed that Nu Skin has attracted excellent professionals as well as nurtured successful leaders of both integrity and vibe, which indicates that Nu Skin’s corporate culture provides a platform for personal improvement. I appreciate especially that Nu Skin advocates the “Force for Good” culture and values social morals. business partners need to learn how to do the right things and be a responsible person instead of pursuing only for money and profits.”

Develop Business in Japan modestly

As a result Janet resigned from her previous job immediately to join Nu Skin She had been living in Toronto, but the belief in the great potential of Asia market brought her to develop business in these markets at the very beginning. She said that she followed wherever Nu Skin went. Janet says the experience of developing the Japanese market is worth sharing. “I like playing golf. I introduced Nu Skin to a Japanese businessman in the golf club, and thus I got to know several Japanese businessmen in Hong Kong. I finally got my guides to the Japanese market. That greatly enhanced my confidence. In 1993, I went to Japan with them to develop my direct selling business. I stayed in Japan for 11 months to train my partners and I had been to every city along the Shinkansen Line, and my business started to take shape. “The Japanese society 20 years ago was perhaps more exclusive and male-dominated than now. For a Chinese woman, it would be hard to establish her position in it and the reason why Janet succeed depended totally on her respect to others. “When contacting with the locals for the first time, we had to be humble. They would feel alienated if we talked in English at the very beginning. That’s why I learnt to introduce myself and greet them in Japanese, though under most conditions I communicated with the locals with the help of my interpreter, which also showed my respect to them. The most important thing is to integrate into their culture. I remember when I was leading a male team at first, I often asked for advises from my partners about how to interact with Japanese men; I learned to appreciate their abilities , communicate with them before making decisions and invite them to do direct selling business with me. I always pledge to my partners that they all have the potential to be great leaders. leaders better than me. But of course I had to show them my ability first, otherwise they would not be easily convinced. It is also important for me to keep a modest attitude during the communication.” Janet was very grateful to the Japanese partners for the interpretation support provided, which gave her a chance to understand the locals’ minds as well as master the recipe for developing her business in Japan.

Assign the right person to the job and Cultivate Leaders

When asked about the challenges encountered in the direct selling business, she indicated that she did face some difficulties when building the team, which she had to change her mindset, Janet followed the general business training models at the early stage, such as training people through slideshow presentations, and expecting people would follow the instructions automatically. “This dull model actually made the content difficult to digest. The most practical way is to lead with examples because people can follow the leader naturally. “It also requires some techniques to maintain the morale of the team. Janet recalled that there were times when many partners left due to the decrease in revenue, which made her rethink a lot.” I believe in the business and it depends solely on the partners’ mindset. It finally made me realize that since everybody has different thoughts and mindsets. It was not feasible to detain or to train all partners in the same way. I learned to determine the partners’ enthusiasms by observing their behaviors. Direct selling a business that needs at least two to three years of devotion and persistence, so I focused on training those new partners who are willing to devote themselves into business with full awareness of the fact. The training usually lasts for three months, and then I will let them do the business themselves. With the hope that they could work independently and grow into great leaders, which will benefit the continuous development of the whole team.”

Change your way of thinking to yield twice the result

Janet said that she is very interested in training leaders. She asked new partners to learn to know others’ needs. Understand the nature of direct selling business and be prepared for the change of their thinking pattern. “Many people only know how to express their thoughts while having no idea of how to understand others’. Nu Skin is a people-oriented business, in which, to know the people is fundamental to success. We are dealing with people face-to-face, so it is necessary for us to be prepared for the possible rejection and denial. To let people recognize our concept, time devotion is a must. Since the release of the ageLOC® series, it has become easier for business partners to achieve success, as long as we are willing to adjust our mindset with the continuous innovations of the company, the achievement is predictable. I found that many housewives have done also very well for they do not have much psychological burdens and are very accommodating because their mindsets are not much constrained by the previous jobs. Thus, they can easily master the tips of the direct selling business.”

Improve others’ Lives

Those who recognize the Nu Skin  philosophy are definitely tending to improve others’ lives. As a Christian, Janet has always wanted to do something meaningful to others’ lives. Her ambition when joining Nu Skin was to have partners’ lives improved. “Many partners were grateful to me that I introduced them Nu Skin and thus changed their lives, which is the reason why we are in a very harmonious relationship. Nowadays, I still take the advantage of every convention to provide them trainings. My team spreads all over Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc. As long as the partners are willing to come to Greater China, I will be glad to train them and help them grow. “In addition, Janet can now devote more time to evangelization and helping the disadvantaged groups to achieve her personal goals, because Nu Skin has given her the financial and time freedom.” I have started to provide services for single mothers in Canada since 9 years ago. What I would like to do the most is not only to improve their financial conditions. But also to change their thoughts and help them to achieve a better life. It is exactly what the direct selling business spirit encourages.”
