I studied Business Administration at the University of Caracas and later worked for a multinational cosmetics firm (L’Oreal). It was more than a job, it was living and breathing marketing, in the fullest sense of the word. But I had no time for myself, working 10-12 hours a day. In 2001, I decided to move to Spain to specialise in marketing, but I knew I wanted to be my own boss. I opened a franchise, but it didn’t work out, so I went back to a traditional job. After my first child was born, I realised that I no longer wanted to depend on the decisions of others; I wanted to enjoy life with my family without limiting what I could earn. There is still a folder called “projects” on my computer, containing different action plans for opening businesses, but none of them were possible with a near empty bank account.

I had thought about opening a business for several months, while attending different courses and thinking about what to do. I’m not the kind of person who just waits for something to happen. I like to live life to the fullest. The first time I heard about Nu Skin was from a friend, who recommended the business, but I had already worked in the cosmetics business for 7 years and I really wanted to switch to another sector.

I heard about Nu Skin again 3 months later. This time it was a friend who I hadn’t seen for a few months and when I did, I was amazed. I asked her what she had been using on her face, she looked that much better! She mentioned a device, so I didn’t hesitate to use my credit card to buy one for myself. When the box arrived, I had no idea what to do, so I met up with her again, and the rest is down to Cecilia Molina and Paz San Román.

If you ask my friends to describe me, they would probably say I am a dreamer. My life today is what I was dreaming about 7 years ago, as I decide how and when I do things. I dreamed of travelling, and I now travel every month thanks to Nu Skin, either for pleasure or on business. I love flying. Ah, and one tip. Always ask for a middle seat, so you have two prospective customers to chat to! My dream was to have time, time to watch my children grow and time to enjoy my parents’ company. I recently posted this: “On Saturday I took a moment to reflect and be grateful for everything I have achieved. I remember how, not so many years ago, I was wishing for more. If I had to choose, I would want to stay like this for ever.”

I used to play rugby; I’ve always loved team sports and that is one of my greatest motivations, to help each player to make the most of his or her talent, because we all have a gift for something. In Spain, we have grown thanks to teamwork. I love seeing how Spanish leaders live the kind of life that they told us that we could live. Every day is a new challenge. Every prospective customer has a story, and thanks to Nu Skin I have met a lot of people in the last few years, many of them now special friends. To tell you the truth, it’s as if those of us who decide to make this business a lifestyle have a special gene. I even wonder now whether Dr Chang knew that all along.

My most unforgettable experience was less than 6 months after I joined the business. I was still not sure of what I was doing, but I went to the convention in Utah with Cecilia Molina Borja. I used to think of Nu Skin as a Dane and a Swede telling us things. But when I got there and saw 16,000 Distributors, I shed tears as I listened to their success stories. I heard thanks for what we do in Malawi and other countries where we make a difference. And I will never forget it… never.

The key figure for me is 3,000. If you don’t understand that, you are not 100% involved in the business. I like to break my work down into 6-month periods, and successful trips are always a priority, although success doesn’t always depend on hard work. I have a blackboard where I record the evolution of the different lines, and compare volumes with the same month of the previous year, which shows whether I have improved or not. The idea is to discover how to be even more successful.

It keeps me focused. If I don’t meet my targets one month, I have to work harder in the following month to make up for it. I have dream maps all over my house, tables with targets, lists of names to which I add and subtract. All this keeps me focused in my search for growth.

I learned from the best. I go to bed every night knowing that I have sold one more product. It might be a lip gloss one day and then a TR90 the next. It’s important to keep an active client list, and that keeps you motivated. I talk to people everywhere, in the street, in the supermarket… it’s common to recommend things. Why not recommend a first-class product and an unusual business opportunity?

When I started, all I wanted to do was to earn a little extra by recommending the products. I easily qualified as an Executive, dropped out and then qualified again. It was then that I found someone interested in the business, 240 miles from Madrid. A few months later this was followed by someone else, 390 miles away, and then another 370 miles away. It seemed like a joke, considering that Madrid was my place of residence. Another problem was the lack of information. Spain was just beginning and there wasn’t much support. I was lucky, however, as all the pioneers were in Madrid and we used to meet from time to time to try to create something special from what we saw as a great opportunity. At the time, I wasn’t completely confident that I could do this. I wasn’t born in Spain, I didn’t study here, I had made no contacts with my franchise. I worked in a very small company, and from home, so I had no office friends. But (there is always a “but”) my face, and then my body, changed with TR90, and that gave me back my self-confidence. I started to create my own story with my experiences. I am involved in this project every single day. I don’t mean that you must go out and talk to everything that moves, but you must be connected and constantly searching for entrepreneurs, for satisfied customers, and I promise that those challenges will be a source of laughter in the future, when you remember how hard the beginning was and how much fun you had later…

This business is driven by emotions. If you are feeling great, make the most of it. If you feel down, contact other members of your team. Recharge your batteries. Do what successful people do. Love yourself. Exercise for an hour, meditate, go to yoga, whatever… but take some time for yourself, show what you are worth, and your team will follow. Lead by example. Read everything that the company sends you and don’t expect to receive training for everything. Train yourself. There is so much information available that it is often easier to ask, but you will see things differently when you realise that YOU are your business and that YOU are responsible for your own success.

When I had my second child I had to rest for nearly seven months. I was too weak to move. It was thanks to my friend Cecilia Molina that the team didn’t feel overlooked. I often thought of giving up, but I started to feel better just before the baby was born, and I went to see a prospective colleague 310 miles away. Her qualification process started when I was home with the baby, and I supported her by phone while she obtained her Executive status. That is when I truly understood how this business could grow, and how technology could make my life a little easier. That was when I continued with meetings and training, and the business began to grow again.

I go to all company meetings. We organise team meetings, in person or via Skype, and webinars. I keep my Facebook training pages active, so I keep connected and this helps me to transmit information to the team.

This opportunity has changed my skin and my body, and now it has changed my heart. People see that, they like it and want it for themselves. I don’t like to make comparisons. Everyone is unique. But I try to make a connection to understand people’s potential and teach them to use it to talk to others. I don’t mind if someone is better than I am. On the contrary, I try to learn from them.

There are no brands in my home or my makeup bag other than Nu Skin. That’s the best way to lead by example. If your business isn’t doing as well as it should, ask yourself if you are really a 100% fan.
