It’s never a pretty sight, and it’s one that’s becoming increasingly common: a recent study from Indeed found that 52% of workers have experienced burnout in 2021, up from 43% a couple of years prior.

As common as burnout is, it’s also surprisingly misunderstood. Most business leaders have gotten pretty good at recognizing the symptoms of burnout, but some deeply held misconceptions remain that threaten to only make the problem worse. Here are 5 of the most common myths about burnout that leaders have a responsibility to push back against:

In the business world, there’s a lot of discussion around “fit” — and for good reason. Not every person is suited for every role, and some individuals will work better with certain teams than others will. Good leaders will often be looking for subtle signs of fit, such as team enthusiasm, or signs of its absence, such as lots of team conflict. Burnout is not one of those signs.

Employees rarely, if ever, become burnt out due to the work itself. Far more often, burnout comes as a result of overwork, deadlines, or poor communication from management. Encouraging employees to change positions should be an absolute last resort. Instead, leaders should focus on how working conditions can be improved so that employees can have a desirable relationship with their position.

Some industries are prone to especially toxic myths about the kind of work people with certain jobs are expected to perform. Take, for example, Wall Street’s famous 100-hour weeks or the fact that well over 20% of software engineers work more than 45 hours a week, with 5% working more than 60. It’s easy to start buying into the logic that these roles simply cause burnout and there’s little that leaders can do about it.

This is, of course, untrue. Leaders have the responsibility to push back against industry norms if they’re actively harming employees. Moreover, if you can promise healthy working hours and conditions to those in roles historically prone to burnout, you’ll have a much easier time recruiting top candidates.

If you’ve got an office full of happy workers save for one employee experiencing a spot of burnout, it can be easy to dismiss that as an isolated case. Surely that employee must have something going on in their personal life — why else would no one else be feeling the same way?

The truth is that what may initially seem like an isolated case can quickly become the first of a proper outbreak. Your other employees may simply be at earlier stages of the burnout process, or perhaps they’re worried about how you’ll react if they show signs. Every individual case of burnout is still a leader’s responsibility, and it's their job to use its lessons in order to prevent other employees from reaching the same state.

Vacation: the panacea for burnout, right? Well, the reality is a bit more complicated. While time off from work can indeed help assuage the pains of overwork, simply tacking on a few days to each employee’s vacation package isn’t going to cut it.

A recent study from Deloitte found that workers leave more than 27% of their vacation days unused, and that number is increasing year on year. Making vacations mandatory is one option, but even then workers may remain stressed about the work they’re missing or still work during their vacation time. Create an environment that doesn’t just allow vacations, it accommodates them by fairly and appropriately delegating an employee’s work in their absence.

You don’t need to completely overhaul your business in order to prevent burnout among your team members. A few employees feeling undue stress in their work isn’t a sign that it’s time to upend your business model — that itself will likely cause more stress than it alleviates.

Instead, talk to your employees about the specific aspects of their job they’re struggling with. Perhaps it’s the hours, time off, deadlines, or something else entirely — whatever the case, take steps to fix that issue. Burnout usually doesn’t have some grand, overarching cause; it comes as the result of individual workplace policies that employees are struggling with. Fix the policies and go from there.

Because burnout is such a serious issue, it deserves serious attention from leaders. Trying to tackle the problem with industry myths and ill-informed solutions could easily end up doing more harm than good. Regularly taking the time to listen to your employees and understand their needs will go much further in helping to alleviate burnout in the workplace.

Other Sources:
Are You Customer Obsessed? Some are healthy. Others? Not so much. But if your company wants to cut through all the noise, being obsessed with your customers isn’t just smart. It’s downright necessary.

What does being customer-obsessed mean, though? It begins with the mindset of giving the buyer your full attention. Yes, you’re selling a product or a service (or both). Accordingly, you want what you’re delivering to be the best. However, if you don’t pay attention to your customers and cultivate your relationship with them, you will never move past the initial courtship stage and into a strong, committed partnership.

Of course, obsessing over your customers doesn’t mean you have to give in to whatever they want. Customers are always right—to a point. They’re not always right about how your company can deliver what they need, though. That’s why you must start your relationship with all buyers on a collaborative, friendly, “I’m going to listen to you” note. By basing your initial interactions on sharing and respect, you set the foundation for trust ... and maybe even a two-way street of devotion.

Think back to what happens on a first date. You make discoveries about one another. You see if your interests align. You patiently exchange thoughts, questions, answers, and ideas. When the date ends, you decide how you want to proceed.

When you’re a company obsessed with your customers, you act similarly. You commit to getting to know your customers. You exhibit patience as your buyers make their choices. More than anything else, you meet shoppers where they are and value them no matter where they are on their journey with you.

Let’s face it: Sometimes a customer may not be ready to jump into a commitment with you. Does that make them less valuable? Not at all. You need to have self-awareness to acknowledge that all customers have the right to exercise their minds. They have the right to wait. When you give them the gift of space, you open the door to forging stronger bonds down the road.

Never forget that a customer might be someone who hasn’t bought from you—yet. By treating prospects like customers who matter, you honor them with your deference and kindness. After all, they may be on the cusp of a major purchase. You never know.

Making customer obsession a cornerstone of your corporate culture won’t happen immediately. It can happen sooner rather than later when you put a few strategies into motion.

It can be easy to forget that your customers fall into myriad buckets. Spend time understanding them so you better identify and serve their needs. For instance, some customers may love everything you do — they love your product, love its packaging, and love being connected with your brand. Other customers may be more connected to science -- they appreciate your technology and want education on the development of your product or the science behind how it works.

The more you can understand the behavior and needs of your customers, the closer you can get to meeting them where they are. From that point, you can build and expand your relationship in a way that makes sense.

Many companies may talk about being authentic but then struggle to be consistent across all customer touchpoints. It’s important to customers, and one bad experience can undermine several good ones. Any contact you or your representatives have with customers should align completely with your organizational DNA, purpose and brand positioning.

Take the topic of empowerment and diversity, for example. These things are not just important to me, but to Nu Skin as well. Our goal is to provide diverse opportunities, and we’re investing time, talent and resources toward achieving that goal. If we were to somehow act against it when connecting with customers, we would cause an imbalance in our relationships with them.

Instead, we demonstrate our inherent companywide beliefs during all customer touchpoints.

In the future, customer management is going to become increasingly critical to all businesses. Specifically, this means keeping customers happy. It is always less expensive and more beneficial to retain a customer than to try to win them back. Yes, you can persuade them to come back, often by leveraging incentives like discounts or special offers. But with every re-engagement, it becomes harder and harder to keep their attention. Plus, you may end up spending a lot of money in the process.

How many times can you beg someone to return to you with a special discount, trial offer or free gift? Eventually, the customer comes back for a shorter and shorter period until they’re no longer a customer at all. So doing whatever you can to delight them early and keep them committed often makes more sense all around.

Customer obsession isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s always growing and evolving because your customer base is always changing. You may be in a growth cycle one quarter and just maintaining momentum the next. Regardless, you can’t afford to put your customer care initiatives on autopilot. Complacency is the first step on the road to a major loss in your customer service focus and quality.

It may sound hard to make customers a top business priority from now until the end of time. It will get easier. As customer obsession becomes a guiding principle in your organization, you and all your team members will start making customer-centric choices by instinct.

I’ve saved the best news for last: You’re not the only entity in the buying relationship to show some obsession. Customers can get just as obsessed with your brand. When the obsession runs both ways, you’ll enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship that will stand the test of time.

Written By:

Connie Tang

Chief Growth and Customer Experience Officer

Nu Skin
Using Data to Connect, Attract, and Nurture
Now more than ever before, organizations have the ability to collect data and use this data to gain insight and make data-driven decisions. The data collected from different experiences can help businesses predict trends, identify gaps, better understand their customers and their needs or wants, and much more. Having a better understanding of your customers can help you create more personalized and customized experiences. When you provide these tailored experiences, you are able to create a community for customers to connect with your brand ultimately attracting new customers and nurturing existing ones.

Each of us interacts with personalized experiences every day. Whether it’s a targeted social media or email ad, a suggested product on Amazon, recommended movie on Netflix, or a “Discover Weekly” playlist on Spotify, consumers expect personalized experiences. In fact, a survey of 1,000 US adults by Epsilon and GBH Insights found that 80 percent of respondents want personalization from retailers.

If you want to keep your customers happy, it is critical to create personalized and customized experiences for them to keep them feeling connected, attracted, and nurtured.

At Nu Skin, we’re creating personalized experiences for our customers, such as our new Vera Skin Consultation, which will connect our consumers with the right products for their individual needs. When we combine data, technology, and personalization, we can create unforgettable experiences for our customers.

With these great capabilities, also comes significant responsibility. At Nu Skin, we recognize the important need to be transparent with our customers in how we are processing, safeguarding, and protecting their personal data. From designing with Privacy in mind, to ongoing training and awareness of employees, we are continually focusing on ways to increase our consumer trust through our commitment to respecting the privacy and personal data of our customers.

If you do not understand your customers and who they are, you are not able to connect with them. According to research done by Salesforce, more than two-thirds (69%) of customers expect a connected experience when they engage with a company.

One of the ways we’re connecting with our customers at Nu Skin is by offering different ways to communicate. We’ve partnered with customer care industry leaders to help us communicate with our customers however they feel most comfortable whether that is via text, email, social media, chat bot or phone call.

Meeting your customers where they are and communicating with them in their preferred channel, is just one example of the many ways you can connect with and better understand your customers. It is critical to have a clear understanding of who your customers are, their needs, and how your brand can help fill those needs.

Once you meet your customers where they are and understand their needs, you can build an affinity to your products and ecosystem because of the personalized value added. In addition, you are able to create personalized experiences tailored to their needs and share messages that resonate with them.

After you connect with and attract customers to your business, you must continue to keep them at the center of everything you do. You should collect feedback from your customers and nurture your relationship with them using surveys, thank you cards or emails, phone calls, etc. Survicate says in their guide Your Ultimate Guide to Customer Feedback for 2021 that “Nothing shows your customers that they are important better than asking for their opinion and acting accordingly. When asked for an opinion on a product or experience, your customers feel valued and treated almost as a part of the creative team.”

You need to continue learning about your customers' needs and wants and adjust to meet those because if you don’t, someone else will.

When customers feel that your brand cares about their individual needs and story, they are better able to connect not just with your company but with other customers as well, creating a community. Not only will this community build loyalty to your brand but it can also give you more opportunities to learn about your customers and continue creating exceptional experiences for them.

When all is said and done, no community can thrive without trust. When you are committed to respecting and protecting the privacy and personal data of your customers, you will further increase brand loyalty, consumer trust, and mitigate potential risk. Part of continually nurturing your customers and caring about their individual needs is safeguarding the data they share with you, acting in accordance with various privacy and data protection laws, and ethically considering how to appropriately use the available data.
How to Create Your Work from Home Routine
Working from home. It’s something many of us have become more familiar with earlier this year. Whether it is your first experience with working remotely or you’re a seasoned work-from-home expert, we could all use a little extra advice to help us stay productive and focused. Here are nine tips and tricks from the experts to help you avoid work burnout and find balance, so you can actually thrive within your work-from-home routine.

Research has shown that self-care also improves your productivity. Making sure that you are doing something for yourself each day is good for your mental health, and will help you manage stress. Pick a hobby to develop, a book to read or a self-care routine to incorporate to ensure that you’re taking the time for yourself. Chief Human Resources Officers at Nu Skin, Jeff Bettinger said, “We encourage a healthy work-life balance at Nu Skin. One of our values is to be accountable and empowered. We empower employees at all levels to act and take personal ownership for their actions. That’s no different with working from home, and our employees have embraced that in our new work environment. That includes being encouraged to spend ten percent of their time being innovative and for self-care during the week.”

Art Markman, PhD, the author of Smart Thinking, talks about the importance of being active and taking care of your body. “Social distancing doesn’t mean never moving. If you live in a place where you can keep your physical distance while still going outside, then make sure you run, walk, or otherwise exercise. If you have an old piece of exercise equipment gathering dust, then break it out. Or find some exercise videos online and follow along. Research suggests that regular exercise has benefits for your ability to think and also boosts your mood.” Find which form of exercise works best for your body and your schedule and stick to it.

“My rule is no screens on Saturdays”, says Nirav Shah, CEO of Senital Healthcare. “It allows me to recharge, spend time with family, and come back Monday better rested and with new insights.” She also encourages her employees to implement this tip as well. Don’t be afraid to unplug and take a break from technology, so you can be more in tune with what your mind needs.

The founder of Chanty, Dmytro Okunyev, commented on goal setting, “Don’t force your employees to be fully productive for 8 hours per day. Instead, set goals for the day, week or month and make sure that employees achieve them.” When setting your goals, try visualizing the results you’d like to see, and then plan your goals around that.

“Set working hours, use a planner, create a workplace, leave the house and socialize”, recommends Celilna, co-founder of Career Girl Daily. It’s difficult to have a good work-life balance, but by setting times to start and finish work, a healthy balance can be achieved. Using a planner and writing down all your tasks and goals is key to staying organized and productive. Make sure you have a good work space, Having a set-aside space will help your mind focus better and get the job done more effectively. The Manifest, shared in a press release, says that the number one thing employees are doing to remain productive is to have a designated workplace.

Digital marketing author Shannon Belew talks about different aspects to create a productive work from home environment. "Its location, lighting, and confinement of clutter are all important." The right environment can help you be more productive and happier. Another tip from Shannon is to keep a plant or two in your workspace. It adds a nice touch to your workspace and research shows that having plants in an area increases your productivity and makes you happier while you work.

Socialize with your co-workers using the technology that your company provides. Some companies prefer to use Slack to keep everyone in on the loop. Richard Dillman, Senior Application Developer at The Muse, shared, “Asking in private chats is like whispering in someone’s ear, while [doing the same] in the team chat is the equivalent of spinning your chair around and asking. The ability to overhear conversations and possibly contribute is the biggest thing missing in WFH.” It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a group chat to make sure all team members feel included.

An article by Virtual Vocations shared several tips to stay connected while working remotely. One of the tips was taking a mid-day break. “Make a lunch date with a friend, another remote worker, or neighbor. Staying connected could mean something as simple as getting some fresh air, trying a new restaurant, or exploring your neighborhood.” When you’re sitting in the same chair all day, it’s a good idea to get up and stretch your legs.

“It’s important to me to stay connected with my co-workers, even if we’re not talking about work-related topics”, said Jeff Bettinger. “For example, I’ve heard some teams organizing weekly trivia games in their chats. For them this breaks up the monotonous of only chatting about work-related topics. Having virtual team building activities is a good idea to maintain team unity. It’s nice to stay in contact with them and have a little bit of fun too, since we’re not getting that office interaction.”

At the end of the day, what matters most is that you find a routine that works for you. Pick and choose from these tips to see what helps you be the most productive working from home. Thrive at home like you thrive in the office. Be adaptable and flexible. With so much unknown, it’s important to take care of yourself so that you can make the most out of this transitional period and come out of it with new skills and routines.
Ways Your Networks and Mentors Can Help You Right Now
Reaching your goals is a collaborative effort; you can’t do it all by yourself. On the journey of achieving your dreams and goals, you’ll need some help along the way. Networking effectively and taking advantage of mentor relationships is vital for the growth and development of your career. Afterall, networking is the most common way to find work; according to a 2016 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Yale University, 70% of jobs are found through networking.

Networking is especially vital during times of uncertainty and transition. Career changes, unexpected life events, or, even more relevant to today, widespread community or global outbreaks like COVID-19 can create barriers to your plans. Networking and leaning on your mentor relationships can assist you along the way and help you get back on track during uncertain times. Whatever situation you’re in, keep these simple tips in mind as you expand your network and broaden your professional horizons:

Expanding your network and finding a mentor can be hard. Do you formally ask someone to be your mentor, or should it be a natural connection and development? There's no right or wrong answer. However, a common question is where to start? One of the best places to begin finding a mentor is in groups or clubs that have similar goals or experiences as you do. LinkedIn offers groups on its platform for you to connect and engage with people in the same line of work as you. Some professions have official programs or chapters you can become a member of that hold conferences and meetings to learn from one another. Facebook has virtual support groups to help you with things outside of your career. It's essential to keep in mind that you don't just have to have one mentor; you can have several and learn from all of them.

“Support from a network is one of the most critical aspects of professional success,” says Ritch Wood, CEO of Nu Skin. “You might make it on your own, but your chances of success increase dramatically with a network of support at your back. This is something we try to build within our company, through collaborative workplace experiences for our employees, and a strong community for our brand affiliates when they start partnering with us.”

“It’s nearly impossible to exist without bias even if it is unconscious. We all carry the varied parts of our life experience. Yet we are not destined to be stuck if we choose otherwise. Life changing, significant growth can occur when we address the more uncomfortable aspects of our biases and trusted mentors can help us accomplish that. Good mentors not only support and encourage, they also help us stretch and expand our capacity. So, it’s important, on many levels, to find a mentor who truly sees you, hears you and makes you feel safe in your vulnerability,” stated Ruth Todd, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Nu Skin.

Be open with your mentor. Tell them about your goals and your life's ambition. Then ask for their opinions and direct feedback on how to move forward. This will open the door for real constructive criticism that's unfiltered and sometimes uncomfortable. Consider the information and work to make the changes necessary to achieve your goals.

The best kind of mentor pushes you. They provide you with new ideas, insights and thoughts. Mentors can help you amplify your vision and see things that you don’t see. They draw from their experiences and mistakes so that you can learn from their mistakes. They should support you in your endeavors and offer their connections and insights. Mentors shouldn’t let you settle but challenge you. You’ll have to work hard and stretch yourself so that you can reach your goals. Take on those challenges and you’ll be doing yourself a favor.

Mentoring is an accountability relationship and an encouraging one. It's essential to chat with your mentor regularly to hold you responsible, provide guidance, and cheer you on.

“A mentor relationship largely boils down to having someone who can be both a coach and a cheerleader. Having a mentor at all stages of your career is critical to success. They can save you from making costly mistakes that can set you back in your career,” says Jeff Bettinger, SVP of Human Resources at Nu Skin. “So, take some time today to thank them for their advice and presence in your life.”

During uncertain times it's important to chat regular with mentors, we are all experiencing something new and it's good to have someone to talk to through it all. Raffaela Rein, founder of WildWildVentures, shares how she has been mentoring recently. “I’ve offered ‘office hours’ through my social channels since the beginning of the year, where anybody can book a free spot to get mentored. Most of the time this happens via video call because people call in from all over the world.” Work with your mentor to find ways to still meet even it’s virtually.

It doesn’t matter where you’re at professionally, networking effectively gives you a better chance by having a supportive team on your side. The new decade promises unlimited opportunities for those with the commitment and vision to pursue them. Use these tips to get started today and begin pushing your career in a more promising direction.
Everything You Need to Know About the Gig Economy and More
You've hailed an Uber. You've booked an Airbnb. You've seen members of Nu Skin's sales force on social media. You may have even worked in the gig economy yourself.

Gig work has shifted our economy. On both ends, it's more efficient than traditional employment: Companies can pay for only the work they actually need done. Workers can stick to their specialty and, in many cases, have more time flexibility than they would at a regular job.

So why does the gig economy draw such strong opinions? Because it's the most significant change to business models in at least a century. Gig work offers flexibility and opportunity in ways that full-time work does not.

Economic change always comes with challenges. And when we don't understand something, we are usually more resistant to it. So, my goal is to shed some light on the subject so that by the time you finish reading this guide, you'll welcome the gig economy and start getting a glimpse of what’s still to come. If I'm being bold, here's one more prediction: the gig economy is just the beginning of disruption to traditional work.

Believe it or not, the gig economy existed long before full-time work. People have been paying one another to tackle specific projects for centuries, if not millennia. Only because of its recent growth has it been formally named.

In Forbes, the Young Entrepreneur Council defines the gig economy as "the rising labor market that hires temporary, contracted workers instead of traditional employees." It also notes that gig workers are pre-trained individuals who have the opportunity to work for a variety of companies in multiple capacities.

Just how many people participate in the gig economy? Roughly 57 million Americans engage in some amount of contracted work, representing more than 35 percent of the U.S. labor force. According to a report published by ADP Research Institute, which analyzed payroll data from more than 18 million workers, there’s approximately 6 million more gig workers today than a decade ago. This doesn't even include all gig workers — just 1099-MISC contractors and short-term W-2 employees. So Uber drivers, for example, aren’t counted because they’re a different type of contractor. Plus, new research indicates more people and companies are turning to gig workers with greater regularity.

It isn't just ride-sharing workers, either. Gig workers exist in every corner of the economy. Transcriptionists, bloggers, developers, marketers, personal assistants, healthcare workers, and even highly educated professionals like attorneys have joined in.

But if the gig economy is so widespread, why does it still get a bad name in some circles? Frankly, because of a few common misconceptions.

The gig economy isn't inherently good or evil; it is merely a different way of getting work done. But I hear a few criticisms of it come up repeatedly:

Gig work is temporary by nature. That does not mean, however, that it's unfulfilling or that nobody wants to do it.

In fact, a Morning Consult survey found that 80 percent of gig workers are satisfied with their current role, while 59 percent said the same about their financial situation. Among all workers, those numbers look awfully similar: 78 percent and 62 percent, respectively.

Take it from workers themselves: Gig work is at least as satisfying, if not more, than a traditional, nine-to-five job.

Similarly, some critics of the gig economy argue that contract work is limited to the unskilled side of the labor force. But a look at the data tells a different story.

Workers of all education and income levels participate in the gig economy. According to Mavenlink, 47 percent of business executives would like to contract out senior-level roles. What's more, 63 percent of executives would choose gig work themselves if given the chance.

In fact, the gig economy may skew toward the more educated side of the workforce. Since many information-age jobs only require a computer and can be done from anywhere, they are more likely to be contracted out.

This misconception is flat-out false: Workers in every type of employment arrangement are ultimately responsible for their own growth and development. The only difference is that gig workers don't have to climb the corporate ladder or wait for an employer to recognize their work.

While it's true that gig workers may not have a specific "step-up" role set out for them by an employer, they can undoubtedly train themselves to take on more challenging, lucrative work. A blogger that masters whitepapers is likely to get more, better-paying projects. A culture consultant that gets results at startups is likely to sign some enterprise clients.

Gig work has its pros and cons, just like any other working arrangement. But for those who decide gig work is right for them, there are more than enough opportunities out there.

The best way to think about gig workers is as entrepreneurs. Every contractor is in business for herself, just like an electrician or startup founder.

Succeeding in the gig economy isn't just a matter of making sales, though. Whether you want to work gigs for extra money on the side or as entrepreneur you need to implement these three things:

In most states, you can be self-employed without owning an on-paper business. But there's a reason most contractors work under LLCs or other corporate structures.

There's a concept called "limited liability" that protects contractors (and other business owners) from being held personally liable for business situations. The idea is that an investor's liability — even if that investor is the company's sole owner — should be limited to his or her level of investment.

Although it's possible to "pierce the corporate veil" in certain circumstances, contractors operating under LLCs enjoy fewer risks. If the LLC is sued, the freelancer's personal assets and liberty are protected.

Independent contractors have to do their own business development. Although a freelance writer could technically take out a billboard or place a radio ad, most do not. Why? Because most members of the gig economy secure work by building relationships.

Some of this happens organically. A contractor who does an excellent job for one client is often referred to others in his or her network.

The rest requires networking: If you're in the gig economy, do not underestimate the importance of conferences, social events, and trade groups. Getting your name out there is the first step to making money.

If you're in the gig economy, you need to be online. Even if you're simply a transcriptionist, you need a LinkedIn profile that demonstrates the work you can do.

Better yet, set up your own website. In creative fields, this is key: You need an accessible portfolio to prove that you're worth hiring. And if you're a web developer or designer, that is doubly true.

"No" is the most powerful word in a contractor's vocabulary. In the gig economy, not every job you're offered will be worth taking. And even if it is, it might not fit in your schedule. You don't need to be rude about it; explain your objection, and move on. If someone doesn't pay you a fair rate, spend that time on a client who will.

Going into business for yourself is not easy, but it is rewarding. Do the legwork upfront, know your value, and take the setbacks in stride.

The gig economy is all about flexibility. Some weeks, you might have twice as much work as others. Buckle down, make some extra money, and save a little for the lean times.

Fortunately, this works two ways: When you want to go on vacation, attend your child's baseball game, or need a mental health day, you have the power to take it. Being a business owner has its benefits.

Every year, more people and companies are tapping into it. The gig economy is an evolving entity. With that comes limitations.

As you look at doing this type of work, you'll need to consider the alone time. Often you won’t go into the office and will miss out on the social elements present there. In fact, in a survey conducted by The Conversation, they found gig workers were almost twice as likely to report frequently experiencing a sign of loneliness.

In addition to isolation there are a lot of gig workers who aren’t feeling fulfilled in the work they’re doing. And who can blame them? Over six million of these gig workers are sitting in traffic, one of the worst experiences people go through on a daily basis. Some of the work is just mindless and don’t offer ways to set goals or work towards something.

There’s no built-in ability to scale the work or your business. A lot of the work is one dimensional. Meaning you do one job and move on to the next job to do the same thing. This can add a lot of stress to your life. If you work in a traditional job you’ll generally have the chance to build or work with a team to increase your impact and success. You’re not working in a team environment and it’s all on you.

The gig economy is an evolving entity and not all gigs are the same—some gigs provide answers to these limitations, including direct selling and other work-from-home models. Every year, more people and companies are tapping into it.

That's a good thing, but with it has brought growing pains. Workers are struggling for stability and business leaders are still learning how to get quality work out of people they do not directly employ.

In multiple ways, the gig economy is at a crossroads. Laws like California's AB5 prevent media organizations from accepting more than 35 "content submissions" per year from freelancers. The poster child for the gig economy, Uber, has publicly announced that it plans to replace drivers with self-driving cars.

But regulations and technology can also be forces for good — the catalysts that cause positive advancement and evolution. At Nu Skin, we believe the gig economy should generate new opportunities for people, not take them away. We like to see it as more of an “opportunity economy,” which is fundamentally different than how companies like Uber see it.

For companies to truly thrive in the evolving future of gig economy, they’ll need to be more considerate of the human experience; empowering people to have fulfillment in addition to flexibility.

Attacking the gig economy for its imperfections is like blaming roads for having potholes. Rather than tear up the way, why not patch it with things like portable retirement savings programs? The gig economy isn't perfect, and it may never be. But it's helped millions of people around the world build a better life, and to us, that's reason enough to invest in it.

Author:

Ryan Napierski

President of Nu Skin
5 Steps to Actually Achieving Your 2020 New Year’s Goals
After a holiday season full of excessive shopping, Netflix binging and overindulging in desserts, January comes around and everyone seems to be newly committed to their goals. The new year brings a focus on health, relationships, finances and more. You might have even pledged to keep a resolution or two yourself.

But as the year progresses, motivation and intentions die out. Eventually you find yourself in the same old routine as the year before. Often, people have a hard time recalling what resolutions they set in the first place.

It’s no secret that January 1st brings an influx of commitments to improved lifestyles. Fitness classes fill up, meal plans are purchased, planners and self-help books fly off the shelfs. But did you know that approximately 80 percent of resolutions “fail” by mid-February (U.S. News)? That’s a lot of abandoned resolutions.

So, what are the other 20 percent of people doing to stay committed to their goals beyond February? How do you retain motivation throughout the year? Here are a few tips from Nu Skin executives for maintaining your 2020 goals.

“Start with a clear vision of what you would like to accomplish for the year. Then set goals that will ensure progression toward that vision in each area of your life. A clear plan in the beginning will help keep your life balanced and focused as the year progresses.” -Ritch Wood, CEO

Before you plan anything, goals should be set with clear intention and vision in mind. Perhaps ask yourself, “Why is this important to you? How do I envision the end results? How exactly will it enhance my life?” When setting new goals, start with your “why” and throughout the year, continue to use it as a constant reminder to progress and move forward.

“It’s important to set reachable goals and create accountability for accomplishing them. Seeing progress builds momentum and helps you stay motivated throughout the year.” -Jeff Bettinger, SVP Global Human Resources

What does this look like for you? Maybe it means telling a few close friends about your goal to run a 10K. You can create accountability by asking them to follow up with you so that you can feel motivated to continue working toward it. Break it up into smaller goals that you can work on day by day, continually progressing towards your ultimate goal.

“For me, the best way to achieve goals is to change small behaviors and be consistent. Over time, those small changes will result in achieving big dreams and living an intentional, purposeful life.” -Ruth Todd, SVP Global Public Affairs

Occasionally in life, we are confronted with making significant lifestyle changes like schooling, career, moving to a new house or apartment, marriage and family, etc. But much more often, we are inspired to make small changes that can lead to gradual, yet long-term, improvements in our lives. Take for instance someone who wants to improve their sleep schedule. A small change can be to stop looking at your phone 30 minutes before bed in order to calm your mind and ease you into better sleep. This minor adjustment can end up making vast improvements in your quality of sleep. Small changes can make a big difference.

“I utilize the new year to assess where I am heading directionally in my life, rather than focusing on a specific outcome. Therefore, what I tend to focus on is the trajectory that I am on personally, professionally, intellectually, spiritually, and relationally. Doing this could lead many to consider taking on a side hustle or pursuing a passion project. It can be a great way to get you out of a rut and can challenge you in new areas of your life.” -Ryan Napierski, President

Life should be about challenging yourself and actively feeding your passions. Whether it’s improving a skill, furthering a relationship or pursuing an idea, being brave and more active in your goals will result in a more fulfilling and engaging lifestyle.

“I’m a big believer in making lifestyle changes throughout the year, rather than just committing myself to arbitrary goals at the start of the year. I try to find balance by allowing myself the freedom to pivot when needed and by making time for the things that I love.” -Vince Perfetti, SVP Chief Transformation Officer

Goals shouldn’t just be a temporary challenge for yourself. They should be created with the intention of making a long-term adjustment in your lifestyle. For example, instead of seeing your new health goal as temporarily going off soda for 12 months, try to look at it as adopting a healthier, long-term lifestyle of consuming less processed sugar. When our resolutions are connected to improvements to our health and satisfaction throughout our lives, we are much more likely to sustain these changes in the long run.

It's a new year! Set your goals with intention and make them happen. Turn this into a year you can reflect on and see how far you've come. Start with your “why” and don’t be afraid to take that first step.
How To Be Customer-Centric In Business
“The customer comes first” is a reoccurring phrase that we hear in any job role. Whether working for a large corporation or a small “ma and pa” shop, the theory rings true: customer-centricity is vital in today’s growing consumer society. With similar products found on the market, the main distinguishing factor is often what brand is printed on the box. Customers trust companies over others and can remain loyal for years, so focusing on the customer’s wants and needs is key to a successful business.

Customer-centricity means an organization that is customer-focused, right? In theory, yes. But being customer-centric goes beyond just being customer-focused.

Customers want products and resources that provide them with unexpected rewards and services. According to SAP, six customers out of ten cite this as a reason to stay loyal to a brand. When visiting a restaurant, servers are typically effective in serving what you ask for. But what if you never needed to ask in the first place? What if you had a server that brought you an appetizer before you even ordered anything? Unexpected exceptionality provides customers with a positive and memorable experience that leaves them wanting to come back. Customer-centricity prioritizes customer satisfaction before and after the sale and meets and exceeds the expectations of the customer.

According to a study by Deloitte and Touche, customer-centric companies were 60% more profitable than their counterpart companies that did not make this a priority.

Knowing the necessity of this principle, how can we help create more customer-centric businesses? How can we ensure the customer knows that “[they] are always right?”

If your goal is to make an organization that is customer-centric, it’s important to cultivate a customer-centric environment. It all starts with a core value.

Nu Skin has defined its culture as the “The Nu Skin Way.” It describes both who we are today and who we want to become. It acts as a guide that clearly defines how to be the best we can be, with eight principles that describe the way we aspire to act.

Most employees at Nu Skin’s corporate campus carry a small badge that has the core values on them, standing as motivation and drive at work. We all strive to live the “Nu Skin Way” and customer obsession is a major focus. As stated in the Nu Skin Way:

“We place the customer at the center of everything we do. We rigorously research and intimately understand our customers, and we design all solutions with their needs in mind. We foster community and fierce customer loyalty through personalized customer experience at every touchpoint.”

Ensuring that all employees understand and live by the “customer obsession” mentality establishes more satisfaction from our customers, especially since the employees and sales leaders are the face of the company.

Customers and employees are at the heart of every business, and Nu Skin believes that in order to make the right decisions that align with its values, collaborative efforts to obtain information about how to better the company is crucial. “I believe success begins with listening,” said Ritch Wood, Nu Skin’s CEO. “We have to decide what we want together because it’s only as a team that we will achieve it.”

According to Diane Gherson, head of HR at IBM, employee engagement drives two-thirds of her company’s client experience scores. Without employees understanding and living the core values of customer centricity, (according to Diane’s results) two-thirds of an organization’s client experience scores would drop.

As much as your customers may love your current company’s products and culture, what prevents them from moving to the next competitor?

According to a Mckinsey study, 80% of executives feel their business models are at risk of being disrupted by competitors. With a lack of innovation, many of these executive’s fear could become a reality. Through the constant investment of research and technology, companies can continue to create competitive products for their customers and do more than just appease them.

Consider a major leader in the tech industry, Apple. Apple originally started as a computer company in the 1980’s. Today, people are not just buying Apple computers, but you can’t go a day without seeing an apple watch or pair of Air Pods, or Apple TV, iPad, or the latest edition of the iPhone. Regardless of the product, consumers are eager to buy new Apple technologies and much of this is due to the innovation that these products offer.

With over 200 personal care products, Nu Skin has encouraged innovation from its very founding in 1984. Its devotion to research is guaranteed in the quality of its products created by state of-the-art laboratories and a network of 75 in-house scientists and over 150 world-class scientists representing institutions from across the globe. Thanks to these skilled scientists committed to innovation, Nu Skin releases devices and products that have changed the skincare and wellness industry. In fact, in May of 2019, Nu Skin’s facial cleansing device ageLOC LumiSpa was awarded the World’s #1 At-Home Beauty Device System Brand*.

Nu Skin customers continue to love these innovative products and the company is always striving to make an impact in the industry.

Consider your own business and potential innovation within it. How will you make a difference to satisfy your customer’s hunger for new and state-of-the-art products and services?

You now understand the need to create a customer-centric company, but how can you go about doing so? Consider this list of possibilities:

At Nu Skin, we realize it all starts with creating a customer-centric environment. The Nu Skin Way is not just a statement; it is something we live by. We are taking steps to become more aware of our customer's needs and wants and to create a mentality of "customer obsession".

“To be a customer-centric business means to deeply understand and consider your customer. You need to empathize with their problems and desires to deliver to their wants and needs. Strategies and tactics may vary depending on the size and resources of each business, but the resounding principal is the same universally: customer-obsession is key.” -Ryan Napierski, Nu Skin President

* Euromonitor International Ltd; Retail Value RSP terms; all channels; 2017 and 2018. These seemingly ancient days are far behind us as social media continues to evolve every day.

Social media has changed the very world we live in. With 3.499 billion active users worldwide, there are constant changes in social trends and interactions. A platform that was originally created for individuals to share their personal lives and communicate their thoughts has now become the marketplace of the future. Business opportunities are prevalent on platforms and now social media is drastically transforming the shopping industry.

According to Salesforce, 54 percent of millennials depend on social channels to research about products before purchasing them. But how has social media earned enough trust for millions of people’s purchasing decisions to be determined based on its insights?

Ryan Napierski, president of Nu Skin, says, "Today, people don’t shop the way they used to. They want the full experience: social proof, brand engagement, entertaining content, and shopping options. Social media provides those experiences better than any other channel.”

Social media has changed the world of shopping for half of an entire generation and if your business is smart, focusing on creating social media success should be a priority. Let’s take a look into the future of social media and how it will evolve:

Everyone loves a good video. Studies show that videos are the form of content that trends the most across all platforms of social media. Around 100 million hours of video are watched daily on Facebook, and this number will continue to rise. So, try not to get too annoyed with trending videos that pop up everywhere; we’re going to see plenty more of them in the future.

Rapid change and adaptability of social media is seen daily. As we enjoy the benefits of the user-friendly images from social media platforms constantly competing for our attention, we do so at the expense of our privacy.

Enforced rules are nearly impossible in this ever-evolving atmosphere of social media. With the lack of proper regulations, social media provides a free market of ambiguity and concern for its users. Cookies and countless other marketing tactics have conquered the platforms that millions of people use. Valuable information is collected through these marketing efforts and are occasionally sold to other companies. Data Harvesting is becoming an ever-growing issue and consumers are aware of it. According to Edelman’s research, 49 percent of consumers are not willing to sacrifice some of their data privacy in return for a more personalized shopping experience. The future of social media heavily lies in trust!

The battle for privacy across all social media platforms is prevalent today but will only continue to escalate in the future. Social media brands can acquire the results they desire by respecting the privacy of its users. Consider all the information Facebook knows about you. Do you feel like your information is safe?

The majority of the world’s population is transitioning to mobile devices. In fact, research from Ericsson predicts the number of smartphone users to reach 6.1 billion by 2020. Smartphones are becoming the focus of social media users. Within seconds people can find the hottest gossip in the news through Snapchat and discover what their friends are doing in the moment with Instagram stories. Just imagine the future possibilities of mobile-friendly social media!

The world has become fascinated with virtual reality, and businesses are innovatively capitalizing on the numerous possibilities. Today children are playing with VR devices while shopping with parents at the mall. Tomorrow we could see virtual reality become incorporated into social media.

Facebook has already made efforts to combine VR with its social media, and according to Hootsuite, social media apps will use augmented reality to boost advertising revenue in the future. Are you ready for this new digital age of social media?

What is ephemeral content? You’ve heard of FOMO, right? Well, this “fear of missing out” is as prevalent in the digital world as it is in the real world. Ephemeral content is the media seen on any social media platform for a limited amount of time. From Instagram stories to Snapchat filters, no one wants to miss out, and capitalizing on this fear is what makes a great story. With 62 percent of people interested in a brand or product after watching a story, it shows the power of ephemeral content storytelling.

Ephemeral content is advancing and will be the future of social media as long as users continue to build the right story. Stories are growing 15 times faster than posts and feeds. When you open Instagram and Facebook, stories are at the forefront of your attention. Our minds are naturally wired to want to see what our friends are doing at that very moment. Clicking and swiping through countless short stories shared by your network of friends is hard to resist because, well, you’re intrigued by their lives. The growth of ephemeral content will only intensify in the future and will continue to be a major part of social media. Will you be ready for the advancements of stories and ephemeral content?

The world is shifting and so is social media. To ensure a thriving business, brands need to be aware of social media’s changing elements. As social media users, we need to quickly adapt to the changes that are evolving on our favorite social platforms. It’s easy to fall behind, and difficult to move forward without planning for the future. But understanding the future of social media today can result in the successful utilization of social media tomorrow.
How To Recruit Top Talent Employees
According to LinkedIn’s Talent Trend report, 85% of the global workforce would be willing to change their job for a better opportunity. Even further, 45% of those individuals are totally open to considering a new opportunity when approached by a recruiter. That’s a lot of people who are potential employees for new positions.

With this in mind, there are many elements to consider when establishing whether a candidate is a good fit for the job. Who has the best skills specific to the position? Who will be a good fit within the company culture? Who is a fast learner and can take initiative? Who works well under pressure?

Often, it’s not just a matter of who has these sought-after skills and traits, rather, the question is: who, within a pool of competent and skilled individuals, is the cream of the crop and has the most holistic set of skills and experiences that set them apart as the top choice.

So, with more than three-quarters of the global workforce open to new job opportunities, how can you recruit top talent to your organization? And how do you differentiate candidates between the best-of-the-best and all the rest? Here are 3 ways your company can recruit top talent employees for your team:

Making sure applicants are kept updated and in the loop during the hiring process is key to building trust and creating a great candidate experience. To determine whether it will be a good fit for both you and the candidate, clear communication about the position is critical. Accurate descriptions of the roles and responsibilities listed in the job posting and discussed throughout the interview process will help potential talent know exactly what it is they would be doing if hired, cutting down on dissatisfaction and unrealistic expectations about the role.

At Nu Skin, one of the traits that we strive towards as a company is to be direct and decisive. This isn’t just a standard meant for high level or long-time employees, but it's a standard for every employee, no matter how new or inexperienced they are. To cultivate a direct and decisive environment, recruiters and managers need to display transparency about what the job requires and demands, especially throughout the interview process when seeking out new employees.

Potential talent recruits look to understand the values of the company during the job hunt. To be competitively considered, the values of your company need to be presented in an honest and authentic way.

According to a survey from Capital Group, 82% of millennials, who will make up 75% of the workforce by 2025, say it’s important for companies to promote the health and wellness of consumers and employees. Additionally, 76% of millennials consider a company’s social and environmental commitments before deciding where to work, and 75% of millennials would take a pay cut to work for a socially responsible company. No wonder they are referred to as the “Giving Generation.”

In other words, much of today’s workforce cares deeply about making conscious efforts to improve the world, and strongly consider the mission and values of a company before deciding to work for them. “The culture and leadership is what attracts and retains so many to Nu Skin. Ultimately, it’s why I joined the company,” says Vince Perfetti, Chief Transformation Officer. “Nu Skin’s mission to be a global force for good is balanced by the countless opportunities to engage in efforts to give back locally and around the world.”

Nu Skin is just one of many companies that invests in time, resources, money, and people in efforts to improve the lives of individuals and communities in need. And now more than ever, how a company engages and gives back is an important factor to take into account when potential employees are considering new opportunities.

We all know that competitive pay is one element that talented individuals look for in potential job opportunities, but what about the perks? According to Spherion, 85% of potential employees look for the number of perks, programs, and benefits that a company offers when looking for a new job. Work-life balance is huge, and companies that prioritize the perks and benefits that help to establish this for their employees will stand out from the rest.

Nu Skin offers numerous employee activities throughout the year, including holiday events and summer parties that are exclusively for employees and their families. The company also offers unlimited paid time off, healthcare benefits, a generous bonus structure, 401k matching, and award-winning retirement readiness planning. Other perks include wellness programs, an on-site fitness center and a monthly allowance for Nu Skin products.

Offering benefits, perks, programs, events, and resources enhance lives, shows company appreciation, and helps employees feel more empowered in their work. This is something that Nu Skin values and takes seriously as we strive to empower employees at every level to act responsibly and take ownership for their actions.

Whether startup or enterprise, recruiting top talent is essential to the growth of your business. Offering potential candidates a clear and transparent job description, valuable and mission-driven work, and perks that create a fun and engaging environment will ensure that you attract the best of the best.
Nu Year! In fact, the best resolutions are those you think about ALL THE TIME. These are the ones that you’ll be dedicated to make happen, rather than a passing monthly fancy. And when you do think about an important goal, write it down! From sticky notes on your mirror to big bold letters on your calendar, you can only work on a goal if you remember it.

Keep Things Real — Big goals are great. But if you’re going to reach for the stars, be sure you have enough rungs on your ladder to get there. Small, reachable milestones will keep you on track without leaving you feeling overwhelmed. And to make sure you hit these goals, set small “consequences” for missing these goals by their set dates. How you hold yourself accountable is entirely up to you, just so long as the “punishment” or "award" is motivating enough to help you follow through with your original goal!

Measure Your Success — Speaking of small milestones, be sure to keep track of every step you take toward the "Nu You". Little wins make you feel good and can keep your motivation up, even when the end result may still seem far off. Keep track on a chart, in a journal, or with photos to follow your progress. There are even some tech and apps you can use to help.

Fitness: Moov Now

Finances: Mint

Nutrition: MyFitnessPal

Time/Productivity: Harvest

Make It Personal — We all want to be the next big thing on Instagram. But setting that as a New Year’s resolution probably isn’t going to amount to much. Not only is it grandiose, it is also too general to really create any emotional investment. You’ll be far more likely to keep goals with real, personal importance to you and your life.

Be Specific — Like it or not, numbers make the world go around. Making a resolution such as “lose weight” is almost destined to fall flat. Set your goals using exact numbers. Don’t worry about surpassing yourself: these digits can and will change. The point is to stretch yourself with specific goals in mind that mean something. They should look something like this "I plan to lose 2 pounds by January 31 through healthy eating habits and exercising weekly." From there you will want to make small goals each week like we mentioned earlier.

Maximize Your Results — Even the most successful people need a guide, or some help to reach their goals. Look into apps, Facebook groups, and even health products to help you reach your goal. Here are a few ideas:

Beauty/hygiene goals:

ageLOCⓇ LumiSpa

Outdoor activity goals:

EpochⓇ Sole Solution Foot Treatment

Epoch Firewalker Foot Cream

Epoch IceDancer Invigorating Leg Gel

Goals in the sun:

Sunright SPF 50

Health/Fitness goals:

ageLOC TR90

ageLOC Youth

G3Ⓡ

Overdrive

Every step you take brings you closer to the Nu you you’ve always wanted. But nothing will ever happen if you don’t get started.

If you need some help, check out NuSkin.com for products that will inspire and support your New Year’s resolutions far beyond New Year’s eve day.
Nu Skin and the DSA Code of Ethics
Nu Skin is a proud member of the Direct Selling Association, a national trade association of businesses that specialize in manufacturing, distributing, and selling products to consumers using a direct selling approach and model.

The DSA code of Ethics is the backbone of the Direct Selling Association and a powerful expression of a company’s commitment to the highest consumer and salesforce protections. She felt sure she would be able to supplement her and her husband’s income with this product and Nu Skin’s vision. She was a housewife back then and knew that income for part-time jobs that a housewife could do was limited. But she already had the motivation and enthusiasm necessary for taking action. Her positive energy was obvious even when she began her professional life. After graduating from high school, she became a freelance jazz dance and aerobics instructor, hoping to become a backup dancer for an artist she admired.

Later, when she was 30, she made a career switch to the world of golf. While working as a professional caddie for golf tournaments and training junior golfers, as a volunteer, she founded a social education organization for youth development. She met her ideal partner at the golf course and married him.

Soon after joining Nu Skin, she noticed the Nu Skin difference; that is, how the culture and leaders of Nu Skin were providing support to distributors. “I was brought up in a family that made me feel I never received any attention,” she says. “But my upline Team Elite leader put off his own affairs and rushed to me when I needed his support. For the first time in my life, I had met a person who demonstrates his support through his actions. There are so many people who talk the talk but cannot walk the talk, and he has continued to provide me with warm support.” This individual inspired Yumiko to be just as helpful and dynamic a leader as he is so she could guide her own team to success.

Feeling appreciated also played a significant role in Yumiko’s love for Nu Skin and determination to be successful. “This means a lot to me as I had never been valued, no matter how hard I worked,” she explains. Past experiences had also made her lose her faith and trust in people. She states, “Thanks to Nu Skin, I believe in people again.” Her belief in people and the joy she takes in working with them is one reason she has built such an impressive organization. She makes it a point to use the products and understand their benefits first. Then she thoroughly shares them with the people around her while continuing to help others. This helps her achieve her own goals and assists her in building honest and solid relationships.

Yumiko discovered it was important for her downlines first to attend the Ruby workshop. “We can create an environment in which we can meet the qualifications for participating in the Success Trip early if we also aim for the Ruby workshop,” she says. She knew that once they experienced the wonderful opportunities and hospitality Nu Skin provided, they would be eager to work hard to earn a success trip, which is an even more impressive event. When someone in her downline expresses interest in qualifying for special trips, she works with them to help them make the most of the experience.

She feels that a synergy is created within her group when group members share the same goal and put effort into satisfying the conditions for participating in the trip. “We worked hard together and encouraged each other so that three of us would be qualified for the Success Trip in 2015,” she adds. “It was encouraging to know that I was not alone, and I felt a sense of accomplishment that I would not otherwise have experienced by myself.” This close working relationship creates a warm, supportive family atmosphere that is very important to Yumiko as she continues to help new sales leaders expand their goals. She believes new sales leaders who want to qualify for success trips should establish a distribution network by making full use of the company’s product and business-building strategies as well as become knowledgeable about the basic products.

Yumiko feels strongly that people must have a strong personal belief system if they want to be successful. “Have strong beliefs in the company, in your upline and—most important—believe in yourself and don’t be afraid of changes,” she encourages sales leaders. “Plus, please never give up.”

Earning a spot on a recent success trip as a Team Elite Executive gave Yumiko new insight into her role as a leader: “I felt that I needed to roll up my sleeves now that it was my turn to welcome the participants coming in on the following day,” she says. “’I even felt pressed that I must set higher goals to become the right person for the title of Team Elite. I will keep making a greater commitment so that I can catch up with other Team Elite Executives.”

In addition to continually adding new customers and helping her sales leaders move forward, Yumiko keeps her leadership momentum going by continuing to share Nu Skin with people. In fact, her favorite activity is sponsoring. “I just love the moment when a person who was at first not interested in Nu Skin says, ‘Nu Skin is amazing!’ after I explain it,” she says. “Of course, there are those who do not change, but it’s just their choice. There is no time to get upset. You just need to forget about it and go for the next person.” ■

For more Success Stories, please visit www.nsemindset.com.
5 Daily Steps for Greater Happiness and Increased Success
Which comes first, success or happiness? Having a positive attitude and happy outlook on your present circumstances, whatever they may be, will lead to success. Success is not the key to happiness, but rather, happiness is the key to success.

Happiness and success are intertwined. Through daily habits and consistent, deliberate choices, you can ensure you are both successful and happy in the long run. Below are 5 simple steps you can take each day to improve your mood and spearhead your success.

1. Have an attitude of gratitude. Reflect on your day and jot down 3-5 things you are grateful for.

2. Chronicle positive experiences. What went well today? Record a positive experience you’ve had within the last 24 so that you can draw strength and confidence from them.

3. Squeeze in time for exercise. Exercise is a known mood-booster. Stay in tip-top shape both physically and mentally by making time for regular physical activity.

4. Meditate. Spending as a little as 2 minutes a day to detach and unplug can do wonders for your stress level and happiness. Focus on your breath as you inhale and exhale deeply.

5. Engage in a random act of kindness. Thinking of others before thinking of self is a great way to improve your mood. Reach out to an old friend or pay the bill for a stranger in line behind you.

There will likely be a number of unexpected roadblocks that pop up along your path to success that are beyond your control to prevent or even predict. You have probably learned from your life’s experiences that you cannot control the timing and frequency of these unplanned difficulties. Sometimes you are required to face challenges that you never dreamed you were capable of handling. Facing these challenges head on with positivity can give you the confidence you need to succeed. Among all the unanticipated surprises you encounter, there is one element that remains within your control: your attitude. Accomplish your goals by first choosing to be happy! By doing so, you will pave the way for future success. So be optimistic, implement the 5 tips above, and improve your ability to achieve your goals. ■

Sources

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kathycaprino/2013/06/06/how-happiness-directly-impacts-your-success/

http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/19/opinion/happiness-success-achor/
5 D’s Every Effective Problem Solver Should Know
Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by a problem that your immediate reaction was to put it on the back burner? Learning to work through problems and find a reasonable solution can give you an added measure of confidence and control. Or maybe you’ve avoided it altogether only to discover that doing so escalated the issue and made it more difficult to resolve? Learning to work through problems and find a reasonable solution can give you an added measure of confidence and control. With each difficulty you experience, your ability to overcome problems that arise will be strengthened. With more fine-tuned problem solving skills you will be better equipped to effectively handle life’s unexpected hiccups.

So what are the stages of effective problem solving? Implement the 5 D’s below to become a master problem solver—to rule your problems instead of letting them rule you.

You can’t begin to address an issue until it is clearly defined. Do you know what the main source of the problem is? Take the time to identify exactly what difficulty is obstructing your success. Getting to the root of the issue is an important step to solving it. Do your best not to attempt to tackle multiple problems at once. Instead, focus on one issue at a time.

Gather information, ask for help, and develop a plan of action. Having a plan is key to making sure you stay on track and find the appropriate solution in the shortest amount of time. As you develop your plan, build a comprehensive overview of both your objective and the barriers standing in your way.

Now that you understand the root of the problem and have appropriately prepared to solve it, implement your plan. Take note of the impact it has on your desired outcome. Taking action can be overwhelming, especially if unexpected difficulties arise along the way. But be diligent, give it your all, and stick with it.

After pushing through difficulty and making necessary changes, it will be time to check your progress and stack it up against where you started. Evaluate the results and effects of your plan. What did you learn? What worked well, and what did not? Learn from these results and prepare to take the next steps.

Based on your experience, were you able to solve your problem? Measure the effectiveness of the plan you chose and determine whether you need to go back to the drawing board. It may be helpful to solicit feedback from those close to you who may have been aware of your problem or affected by the changes you made.

Fear of failure is one of the most common reasons people put off the necessary steps to solve their problems and ultimately achieve their goals. Keep a positive attitude, maintain a focused perspective, and implement the 5 D’s to help you work through your problems on your way to success.■

Sources:

1) http://www.educational-business-articles.com/problem-solving-strategies.html

2) http://www.businessinsider.com/nine-steps-to-effective-business-problem-solving-2011-7
Social Dos
Social media is a great tool to connect with others in our quick-paced lives. While perseverance is a quality many admire, the development of this trait requires continued effort and commitment to your objectives and personal beliefs. Through struggle comes success. As you power through difficulty, stressful circumstances, tight deadlines, and a demanding list of responsibilities, maintaining a goal-oriented and focused mindset will help transform your goal into a reality.

To further develop and strengthen your level of perseverance, try implementing some of the following tips:

To obtain the level of conviction necessary to persevere,...
http://www.nuskin.com/content/corpcom/en_US/thesource/successdrivers/power-in-perseverance.feed.xml2022-09-07T23:17:07Z2015-04-06T20:00:00Z
The ability to push through times of difficulty and progress towards your goals is a commonly sought after trait.

To obtain the level of conviction necessary to persevere, establish your own personal mission. Reflect on past success and draw from positive experiences. What driving force has compelled you to withstand adversity? Often, this driving force is deeply rooted in core values and beliefs. Identify the values that have contributed to who you are and empowered you to achieve your goals in the past. Having a firm belief in what you are doing, what you are working towards, and your ability to succeed will give you the power to persevere. As you deepen your belief in your mission, you will strengthen your ability to recover from setbacks and move forward when that mission is put to the test.

It can be tempting to get swept up in eagerness and enthusiasm as you embark on the path toward a new goal. However, overlooking the need to pace yourself can have a detrimental effect on your ability to persevere. Most every worthwhile objective is reached by continual and consistent effort. Resist the temptation to become distracted or discouraged by bumps in the road. It can also be alluring to track your progress against the achievements of others. While a level of competition can be healthy, be careful not to allow comparison to slow you down or shake your confidence. Try not to get so caught up in the success of others that you forget your objective and purpose. Your goals should be firmly rooted in value-based motives. If you find that you are easily swayed by others, reevaluate your goal. Remember that as long as you try your best, you cannot fail. As you pace yourself and celebrate your achievements incrementally, you will be motivated to continue your hard work.

No matter how well you have developed your plan and strategy for success, it is always best to be prepared for the unexpected. It is not possible to anticipate every setback that could arise along the way. However, what you can control is ability to adopt a flexible attitude. Planning for the unexpected means not allowing difficulties to completely derail your efforts. Imagine you are on a road trip to a distant location. You have mapped out the course necessary to reach your destination and embark on your trip. Along the way you take a wrong turn, and travel quite a ways down the wrong path before realizing your mistake. When you realize you are off course, what is your immediate reaction? Do you give up on the trip and go back home? To truly persevere you must pick up from where you are and continue onward. Get back on course as quickly as possible to reach your desired goal.

As you cultivate a belief in your mission, pace yourself, and adapt to the unexpected, you will be able to develop a strong sense of perseverance enabling you to achieve success. ■

Sources

http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/231849

http://www.inc.com/ron-burley/3-skills-every-entrepreneur-needs.html

http://www.forbes.com/sites/85broads/2013/08/06/too-ambitious-for-your-own-good-three-tips-for-pacing-yourself/
Willing to Be Willing
Dr. Benjamin Lo is a successful sales leader who first set his sights on the kind of life he wanted to create for himself and his family. He then took steady steps toward reaching his goals by consistently investing in his own growth and knowledge without worrying about the time it took to reach those goals. As he traveled this path to success, he practiced personal development and connected with his team, learned from successful leaders, and wasn’t afraid to make changes in himself and his life.

Ben’s Nu Skin journey began in December 2002 and has withstood various trials and transformations during his professional and personal life. He quickly learned from one of his key mentors, Artemis Limpert, that he had to be willing to be “bad enough long enough to be good enough.” In other words, he had to take consistent action and be willing to learn effective ways to reach his goals. This concept of willingness—being willing to change himself, his actions, and his thinking in order to reach the lifestyle he wanted—has been instrumental in his success. He admits he had to be willing to suspend his own perspective and try something new, to be willing to fail or be rejected, to show up consistently, and to trust and cooperate with something bigger than himself. He also had to have the “willingness to keep going and keep improving and to let my experience be an example to others just as others’ experiences were examples and models for me.”

Opening the Door to New Freedom

Driven by a strong sense to create a new level of freedom for himself and his family and to open this same door of possibility to others, Ben managed to work on adding customers and team members to his Nu Skin business alongside other endeavors. When he first joined Nu Skin, he was a physician working for a group of home birth family and wellness care specialists in the Chicago area. He delivered over 500 babies, including his own children. But his work and long hours took a heavy toll. Rachelle was frequently alone with their children and Ben often missed holidays and social gatherings. Eighteen months after joining Nu Skin, he and Rachelle sold their home and moved to Michigan, where he transitioned out of medicine. “I realized that I loved working with people to expand the possibilities they saw in their lives, and to empower them to take more ownership of their lives and choices,” he says. In addition to putting continuous effort into his Nu Skin business, to add income, Ben also invested in real estate and learned to market and provide life, wellness, and personal transformation coaching. In a few years they also expanded their family from three children to six, eventually adding a seventh.

Keeping His Sight on His Goals

Ben’s Nu Skin journey is one that demonstrates the power behind steady and long-term effort. He continued to nurture his business and add to his personal growth for several years as he worked to reach the higher levels of the company—accomplishments that did not happen right away. Although his life has become even more rewarding than when he was putting in so many hours as a physician in Chicago, he did not reach Blue Diamond status until recently. He actually became a Diamond Executive during a time when he faced serious financial challenges and had to move his family to a very small home. However, he never lost sight of what he wanted to achieve, nor did he ever consider quitting. “It was always a matter of learning to upgrade my own thinking and skills and finding a way to move forward,” he says. “Some of our most precious experiences together as a family and in my business were during this time of transition…when we were still living in a two-bedroom cottage and creating a life of abundance and prosperity within—even though to outward eyes our circumstances looked very limited.”

Learning to connect with people and expand his spheres of influence have been key to Ben. His blog and personal coaching created a wider community in which he could interact with people. The development of social media in the last few years became a new avenue for him to connect with other professionals, resulting in more partners and customers. At the same time, one of his biggest lines, which has subsequently grown internationally, resulted when Ben met new people in the local community. “I think the biggest thing is to find the avenues you enjoy enough to be willing to develop consistency and skill in that arena, and then your sowing will bear fruit,” he points out.

Nu Skin leaders continually provide knowledge as well as motivation to Ben. He loves the analogy that building a Nu Skin business is like pushing a boulder uphill. If you stop pushing and let go, the boulder will roll back down—and your whole team will unravel. But if you keep going—if you continue adding leaders and long-term team members—eventually, the boulder will crest the hill and roll down the other side of the hill with growing force. It represents just how a distributor’s early work leverages previous momentum to pave the way for creating an ever-growing business in the months and years ahead. The momentum Ben and Rachelle have created thanks to their consistent effort has been powerful—they are now Million Dollar Circle Members [i].

Celebrating the Journey

Although Ben is always looking for people interested in learning about the business, customers are a big part of his overall success. “I’ve always added customers along the way who were looking for a natural [health] solution but not necessarily a business, and we’re learning to integrate both more and more powerfully,” he explains. “A business prospect who has a powerful product experience will be much more engaged than one who simply has a head knowledge of the business.”

Key to Ben and Rachelle’s success has been their focus and vision. “Goal setting and achieving has been an ongoing growth process for me,” he says. “Rachelle and I tend to develop an overall vision—often through conversations, pictures, and journaling—and then I set specific business and personal targets that relate to that vision.” He then holds that goal until it manifests, whether it is for the two of them or for his team, and creates concrete steps he can implement along the way to make the goal a reality. Their dream going forward is to see many more people progress toward their own dreams as part of the community and partnership made possible by Nu Skin.

And key to Ben’s enjoyment of his Nu Skin journey is celebrating small victories. “Rachelle and I have learned to celebrate special moments all along the way so we can experience creating and living a successful life on an ongoing basis, rather than have success just be something that happens after we achieve something.” ■

For more Success Stories, please visit www.nsemindset.com.

[1] Million Dollar Circle Members are distributors who have earned over one-million dollars in commissions over the lifetime of their Nu Skin distributorship. And she has learned that there are no accidents when it comes to finding an entrepreneurial opportunity that can completely change the direction of your life—if you are willing to grasp that opportunity, set clear goals, and focus on making them a reality.

Tapping into her need to be an entrepreneur actually began when Iva was attending Charles University. While still a student, she worked at a chain of organic shops in Prague. She soon found, however, that working for a company stifled her independence.

Determined to be her own boss, she found a good location in the city and opened her own organic food store and online shop. In this venture, she distributed products and supplied restaurants in Prague. Although Iva was operating her own business, which helped to fuel her entrepreneurial spirit, she soon discovered she was “employing herself” more than she wanted. “I was experiencing all the joyless aspects of running a business that had high risk and responsibility,” she says. “I felt nothing in the area of personal development.”

Somewhat frustrated, she attended a Nu Skin presentation with an open mind. She was very impressed with the results the Galvanic Spa offered and “completely captivated” by the BioPhotonic Scanner. At the meeting, she met Marianna Horváthová, and Iva credits Marianna’s enthusiasm and energy for guiding her own journey with the company.

Iva enrolled as a distributor at the meeting and immediately began thinking of people she could talk to about Nu Skin, even though she was scheduled to leave for vacation in two days. Before she left, she contacted a banker friend, who enrolled with her sister while Iva was on vacation. Her friend and her sister have become two of Iva’s top leaders.

Although Iva initially continued to operate her organic food store, she always set aside time to work her Nu Skin business on a regular basis. At first, she held all of her meetings in the evenings, on weekends, or one afternoon a week when she did not have to be in the shop. She put much more time into her business once she became a Ruby Executive and saw the potential for growing success. Like many others, she encountered misunderstanding and closed-minded attitudes along the way, but Iva says such experiences taught her to be more patient and more understanding. She also tried to set a good example for her team. “I did what I said and I also showed others that this is the right path and is worth following,” she says. “I showed them that everything is possible and I emphasized their strong points.”

Living with Each Goal Every Step of the Way

Iva Buriánková at the 2014 Regional Convention Force for Good Gala

Iva believes that fulfilling goals requires discipline and a plan if she wants to succeed with Nu Skin. “When I set a goal for achieving a higher title, I lived with the idea of ‘every day at every step’,” she explains. “I reached the first titles with enthusiasm. I planned and had a strategy and clear vision.” She did not let bigger, more long-term goals get in the way of her strategy—she kept her focus on the immediate target. “I focused only on the given goal at the time of qualification,” she adds. “If some activities distracted me and those were not beneficial for me to achieve my goals, I put them off for some time. It has always been about setting the priority and focusing my mind on everyday activities [to reach that specific goal].”

While Iva is intent on building a successful business, she knows that the products and acquiring customers are also key to her overall success. “Enthusiasm for the products and having trust in them is the foundation of a satisfied customer and competent business partner,” she says. “I do not separate the products and the business.” She knows that once people have had a chance to look at Nu Skin’s high quality products and the business model, they are well positioned to choose how they would like to be involved with the company. And this approach has helped Iva grow her team and her customer base, as well as advance in rank.

The strength of her organization and how they move forward as a team is also important to Iva as she continues to add team members and customers. “Before I proceed to the next title, I always focus on the stability of the process—it has to be stable and longstanding,” she emphasizes. Nowadays, she says she sets goals that influence the growth of the entire group.

Real and Positive Changes that Happen Every Day

With determination and consistent effort, Iva saw her business steadily expand. “My life began to change, my lifestyle began to improve and interesting people started coming my way,” she says. “Without exaggeration, I can say that what I experienced with Nu Skin in three years, some people would not experience in 30 because they do not have an open mind for new opportunities in their lives and they are not willing to leave their comfort zone.”

Iva’s life has indeed changed in many ways, thanks to Nu skin. “If I had to answer how Nu Skin has changed my life, dozens of papers would not be enough—maybe not even a book,” says Iva. “Nu Skin has brought such quality values into my life. It has opened the path to personal and social growth. I see so much sense in our daily work; we help people feel better and look better, and we help them to be more successful. It is real and it happens every day.” ■

For more Success Stories, please visit www.nsemindset.com.
Transforming Negatives to Positives
Each of us has personality traits and characteristics that make us who we are. Because we each possess our own set of characteristics, aptitudes and perspectives, we bring something different to the table when working alongside others. As a team member you are energized by the positivity your colleagues exude or are brought down by their negativity.

NU SKIN TIP Avoid arrogance, but take pride in your work and exude confidence as a leader.

TWEET THIS

Leaders often receive criticism for their negativity. In order to be viewed as a positive influence, it is vital that a leader learn to cultivate an environment where their team feels enlightened, empowered and encouraged. However, amid the stresses and responsibilities that may beset you, it is easy to allow negative traits to surface. What can set you apart as a leader is an ability to harness the power of negative traits; to help rather than to hinder.

The following personality traits are commonly perceived as negative. Select those you identify with most and learn how to make them work to your advantage.

Arrogance. As a leader, taking pride in your success and accomplishments shows your team that you believe in what you’re doing. A leader that second-guesses will cause their team to do the same. Be willing to take risks. This will prove to your team that you believe in their ability to succeed.

Envy. Possessing a competitive nature can quickly escalate to an unhealthy level. However, when kept in-check, envy can work to your advantage. If you find that you desire the accomplishments of others, employ your intellect and work ethic to achieve success. Allow your envious nature to work for you.

Selfishness. While focusing on yourself may appear neglectful, it is important to learn when it’s appropriate to say “no.” Assuming the role of a people-pleaser takes valuable time and energy away from the things that matter. In order to help others you have to be able to help yourself.

Pessimism. In small doses, pessimism can provide some much needed perspective. Being cognizant of things that could go wrong enables you to plan accordingly for unexpected mishaps and establish the necessary measures to avoid them.

“A leader needs to know his strengths as a carpenter knows his tools, or as a physician knows the instruments at her disposal. What great leaders have in common is that each truly knows his or her strengths—and can call on the right strength at the right time.” –Donald O. Clifton

Pay attention to the negative perceptions people may have of you, and identify ways you can properly channel that trait and use it as strength. Learning to transform negatives into positives will enable you to lead effectively and achieve success. ■

Sources

1) http://www.inc.com/jim-belosic/how-to-harness-the-power-of-negative-traits.html

2) http://lifehacker.com/top-10-supposedly-bad-personality-traits-that-can-act-1644852692

3) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/beth-weinstock/strength-based-leadership_b_1290464.html
Conquering the Winter Blues
Winter brings shorter days, frosty weather, and diminished sunshine. With this season now in full swing, have you noticed a change in your mood and energy level? You may be experiencing SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). As the temperature drops and the sun’s light seems to be on a permanent “dim” setting, you may find yourself depressed, tired, and irritable.

To many people, the “winter blues” may seem fleeting or inconsequential. However, if left unattended, the effects can evolve into a greater issue that carries over into various areas of your life. Job performance and productivity, relationships, and overall health all have the potential to suffer when SAD is left unaddressed.

SAD is a common side effect of winter weather for many people, most of which also experience correlating shifts in their exercise routines and eating habits. One major component of the lethargy you may experience is due to diminished daylight hours. As the days become shorter, your sleep and waking cycles become disrupted, causing you to feel greater fatigue.

So how do you beat the winter blues? There are several tools that when implemented and combined can enhance your mood and boost your energy level:

NU SKIN TIP:

To beat winter woes, spend at least some time outdoors every day or sit near a window when the weather is particularly chilly. TWEET THIS

Exercise Developing a regular exercise routine is great for relieving stress and maintaining a healthy weight. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins that can last several hours post workout. The result? Increased energy and an improved mood throughout the day.

Eat a Healthy Diet Proper nutrition is essential for your physical and mental wellbeing. When you fuel your body properly it will perform better. To combat fatigue and increase energy, incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates into your diet. Avoid refined and processed foods devoid of the nutrients your body craves. Opting for nutrient rich foods will nourish your body and stabilize your energy levels.

Soak up Some Sun Winter days are shorter, colder, and darker than other months of the year. These conditions often cause fewer people to spend time outdoors, resulting in a lack of Vitamin D. Much like exercise, this sunshine vitamin can greatly improve your mood. A deficiency in Vitamin D can cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and other health issues.

Get Sufficient Rest Although it may feel natural to clock more hours of sleep when the weather is colder, a “hibernation” approach to sleeping may the very thing that’s making you tired. If you allow your body too much rest, you increase your likelihood of feeling more sluggish throughout the day. Try to stick to a routine 8 hours of sleep each night to optimize your energy level.

It is common for many to feel a decrease in their mood and vitality as they settle into the colder, darker months of winter. If you feel you are manifesting any of these symptoms, try implementing the tips listed above. You may be able to roll out of bed a little more quickly and greet the day with more optimism and motivation. ■

Sources

Gratitude in the Workplace
November is a month for giving thanks. As the presenter, what can you do to ensure your presentation is a success from start to finish? It’s as simple as RACE

Content is key to make any presentation rich. Before beginning your preparations, you will need to know who your audience is and what they are hoping to gain. Simply having visually stimulating content isn’t enough. In order for your presentation to be a success, you should include content that combines both visual appeal and relevancy to your audience.

When appropriate, incorporate facial expressions and hand gestures in your presentation to keep your audience engaged.

Here are a few great ways to end your presentation so that your audience feels enlightened and encouraged.

1. End on time. Keep your remarks brief and succinct. As you near the end of your presentation, take a few minutes to summarize the key points you wish your audience to remember most. Reflect on elements of the meeting that will encourage the most productivity.

2. Stay upbeat. Instill confidence in your audience by recognizing their hard work and contribution. Offer recognition for how their efforts have benefited the company as a whole. This will motivate them to stay on track.

3. Encourage action. Wrap up the meeting with a short list of action items that will help your audience and the company as whole move forward. Close with a pleasant “thank you for coming,” and a smile.

The size of your audience may vary from one meeting to the next, but one element remains constant—the audience will need a reason to believe in what you are saying. If you want your audience to get on board, you must show authenticity and genuine interest in your topic. Allow your passion and energy to come through, giving them reason to believe.

You’ve prepared rich content and developed real passion for your topic. When it comes to delivery, find creative ways to engage your audience. Incorporate personal stories and experiences that are relevant to the subject matter. This will draw in your audience and capture their full attention. The more involved they feel in your presentation, the greater the potential for them to be inspired.

Presentations and meetings can often feel like a bland practice of the business world. By implementing some of these strategies, your team members and co-workers will be better inspired. They may even RACE to your next meeting. ■

Sources:

http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140914021519-22308748-how-to-give-a-killer-presentation?trk=tod-posts-post1-ptlt

http://www.inc.com/peter-economy/7-effortless-ways-to-end-every-meeting-on-a-positive-note.html
Focus: Six Steps to Do More of What Matters
A trait of successful people is the ability to fight distraction and focus on the task at hand. Instead, take a moment to list the things that need to be done and number them based on importance. If you have a big project that takes priority but isn’t due for a week or more, break it into smaller tasks to avoid rushing at the last minute. This will reduce stress and result in higher quality work.

Pick your top 2 or 3 core tasks each day.

From the list you have made, pick your 2 or 3 most important tasks to do first. Select those that lead you to completing bigger goals and bring you success. Think of them as the essential building blocks that lead to accomplishing your goals.

Put distractions in their place

Distractions can throw you off focus quickly and waste time. When focusing on the task at hand, silence your phone, don’t check texts or email, don’t browse the web, and avoid anything else that can disrupt momentum.

Do one task at a time.

Multitasking not only slows you down but increases stress, making you less effective and leading to quicker burnout. By working on one task at a time you will get more done, and the quality of work will be better.

Take breaks

Know your limits on how long you can focus. The average person can concentrate on the task at hand for about an hour before productivity drops. When you start to lose concentration, take a minute to stretch, go on a short walk, or do anything else that refreshes your mind. Focus is like a muscle that needs to be trained, so you should also be able to increase your time between breaks as you do this.

Celebrate small wins that build to big things.

It’s important to celebrate small victories on the road to your big projects. Just like you would celebrate losing pounds or inches when getting in shape, celebrate small victories to keep you motivated as you work toward your goals.
Five Tips to Social Media Success
Social media is a great tool to connect with others in our quick-paced lives. Following these five Key Success Drivers will help you maintain motivation and keep you on the path to reaching your goals:

Dream

Every great success started out as a dream. Things such as the automobile, smartphone, or our very own Innovation Center were all once a dream to someone. To make your dream a reality, first use positive emotions to fuel your dreams. Now begin to visualize your dreams by creating a dream board. Find pictures from a magazine or other source that represent your dream, whether it be a dream home, car, vacation, or even something like more time with family. Follow by pasting these images onto a poster board or in your journal. When your dream board is created, make sure to review it often and visualize yourself obtaining it.

Set Goals

Instead of saying “I want to” or “I hope to” achieve this goal, try stating it with conviction –“I WILL achieve this goal.” Take this approach in your outlook and goal setting. Follow that by making the goals specific, and determine your top priorities. When goals have a timeline and are measurable, you will be able to track your progress and recognize when you have achieved them. Don’t forget to celebrate every milestone you cross. Success is at the end of the road you are currently traveling, so don’t give up.

Believe

“I’ve never met anybody who wasn’t superior to me in some way, shape, or form. Everybody seems to have special tools where they have enormous potential, if they can figure out where they ought to be pointed.” – Blake M. Roney

Our thoughts are the catalyst to our actions. No matter how small, our thoughts are constantly moving us towards positivity or negativity. Make sure to convert your thoughts from negative to positive. As you try new things, setbacks will come but make sure to tell yourself that they are a natural part of life and that it is a process of growing and moving forward. As you think about your setback, ask yourself: “What can I learn from this?” and “What will I do better next time?”

Take Action

“It’s not enough just to believe it can happen, you have to take action, you have to take steps every single day to have this belief become a reality.” – Sandie N. Tillotson

Those who achieve and those who don’t have one difference between them, and that is ACTION. Act believing that positive things will happen. See if your daily tasks are contributing to your goals or distracting you. Do you take time to learn, or do you squander it watching TV shows? Carefully consider the tasks you are doing each day. Make the decision to remove tasks that are not helping you achieve your goals.

Lead

Success comes as a result of continually learning and growing, and as a leader you want to motivate others to join you and continue that success. To become a good leader, start by studying other successful leaders. What talents, habits and skills do you see when you study them? Next, look to associate yourself with people that have the same drive as you. If you want to be happy and successful, surround yourself with happy and successful people. As you grow, look to lift others and most importantly lead by example. If people see you contradicting your words with your actions it will affect your credibility.

Being a leader doesn’t just mean that you are successful, but that you help others become successful. Make sure that you are finding ways to serve others, and a deeper happiness will grow as you eliminate selflessness and look for others to help.

To continue your learning experience, visit http://nsemindset.com regularly for videos, quotes, and stories from company founders, top executives and our successful sales people around the world to get motivated and inspired as you pursue your personal and career goals of life.
A Strong Belief System Creates Change
Byeong Cheon Heo and Min-hye Ju were working traditional jobs when they were introduced to Nu Skin. Even though they were comfortable financially, they had no time to really enjoy their lives. This situation motivated them to take a serious look at Nu Skin. Although they were skeptical about direct selling at first, they were concerned about their futures since some of their coworkers had been laid off from their jobs. They decided to become distributors and began building their Nu Skin business part-time by sharing the products and business model with others during their lunch breaks and weekends.

As the couple began to build their business, their dreams became bigger and stronger each time they attended meetings and trainings. As the couple’s success and knowledge grew, they lost their initial skepticism and began to believe wholeheartedly in both the integrity of the company and its high-quality products. Once they had a strong belief system in place and learned how the compensation plan could benefit them, their business began to take off.

The couple usually introduced people to the business in one-on-one meetings, and then invited them to seminars. When prospects joined them in the business, Byeong Cheon Heo and Min-hye Ju had them participate in various training meetings. They made a point to help their team members grow into competent leaders themselves and kept them inspired by sharing their own experiences and knowledge about how to build a successful business.

They recognized that Nu Skin is a leader in both the anti-aging skin care and nutritional supplement industries, and this strong branding has helped support their efforts to find customers and build a team of distributors who are passionate about all aspects of Nu Skin.

Personal Development Helps Lead the Way

For these One Million Dollar Circle Members[i], personal development is a by-product of building a Nu Skin business. “Self-improvement is not an easy process while working,” they say. “However, Nu Skin is a business that offers financial freedom and can help provide personal insights.” Byeong Cheon Heo and Min-hye Ju made it a rule to read books and attend seminars that would increase their own personal development. They also invited upline leaders to dinner, or had counseling sessions with them, to gain insight into good business practices.

Meeting with these mentors allowed them to see their business in a different perspective, and it gave them ideas and action steps to take that would expand their organization. They then shared this knowledge with their team to enhance their team members’ leadership skills. The couple believes that showing people how to improve themselves on a personal level helps to build leaders within individual organizations—people who can “lead the way” for countless others seeking an improved lifestyle and the rewards that success provides.

Byeong Cheon Heo and Min-hye Ju believe now is the perfect time for a person to grow a successful business since anti-aging is such a large and growing market, and Nu Skin is widely recognized as an innovator in this category. They also love the fact that as Nu Skin leaders, they now have the time to really enjoy their lives. In addition, they recognize the importance of always trying to act with a sense of responsibility and striving to make a difference in others’ lives. Most of all, they advise their team members and anyone wishing to build a successful business to remember to make their dreams an important part of their action plan. “Defining your dream will determine the direction of your life,” they say.

[i] Million Dollar Circle Members are distributors who have earned over one-million dollars in commissions over the lifetime of their Nu Skin distributorship. In 2012 the average commission paid to U.S. Active Distributors was $133.92 monthly ($1,607.04 annualized). In 2012 the average percentage of Active Distributors that earned commissions at the highest level (Blue Diamond) was 0.15 percent. Not all distributors succeed or make money. Generating meaningful compensation as a Distributor requires considerable time, effort, and commitment. Business professionals are observing that challenges and stress may be ingredients to success in the work place, and without stress, individuals tend to underperform. Of course, there are negative side-effects of too much stress, too. Understanding and learning to manage stress – the good and the bad –may make all the difference in the type of stress symptoms you experience.

Good Stress

Good stress is commonly known as eustress, and it heightens your awareness and arousal levels. It even increases your ability to adapt to change. James Campbell Quick, Ph.D., executive director of the Goolsby Leadership Academy, said, “Because of the energy that the stress response provides, it enables you to perform at higher levels." This is the stress experienced by athletes that allows them to perform their best work when under pressure. Eustress is also used to arouse your “fight-or-flight” instincts, which promote the physical and mental focus you need when you feel threatened.1

Bad Stress

Too much of a good thing can lead to disaster, though. Eustress can quickly turn into distress (bad stress). Over long periods of time, distress can cause headaches, tension, fatigue, hair loss, and can even increase aging. Although experiencing stress can’t be avoided, it can be managed.2

The key to experiencing good stress while diminishing bad stress is limiting your exposure to stressful situations and maintaining healthy awareness levels. Here are some suggestions to turn your stress into success:

1. Avoid high levels of caffeine. Caffeine can raise your heart rate, which may cause an increase of stress symptoms.

2. Exercise. Physical activity is one way to keep your body healthy, and it provides an excellent outlet for stress.

3. Make sleep a priority. A lack of sleep can lead to serious health problems and may inhibit your ability to manage stress.

4. Clean up clutter. Living and working in a clean environment helps increase focus and productivity.

5. Don’t dwell on the past. There are some things that you don’t have the ability to change. Dwelling on those things can cause longer exposure to bad stress.

What suggestions do you have for managing stress?

1Shea, S. (2004). As a highly self-disciplined professional who had been very successful prior to joining Nu Skin, Mao Chun Hua knew she had to push herself hard every day to obtain the success she envisioned as a Nu Skin leader. Her belief in her ability to reach her goals played an important role in guiding her as she traveled her path to a more rewarding life.

Mao Chun Hua heard about Nu Skin when a friend told her about its products and business model. She then learned all she could about the company and discovered that she could help many people be successful. This concept really resonated with her. Although she earned a high salary in her job, Mao Chun Hua wanted the independence she felt Nu Skin could give her as an accomplished sales leader. In 2003, she left her very respected position and began her Nu Skin journey in Shanghai to develop her career, despite objections voiced by her family and friends.

A Deep Sense of Responsibility

2005 was a busy year for Mao Chun Hua. “I was always too busy to eat anything,” she says. Because she believed in her ability to meet her goals, she never stopped pushing herself. This “fighting spirit” is still very much a part of her today. She feels a deep sense of responsibility to those who have joined her in the business, and she now focuses on helping more people achieve their dreams.

With a strong belief that you must help others succeed before you can be successful, Mao Chun Hua makes Nu Skin’s force for good culture a big part of her life. When one of her customers faced a financial crisis and could not afford to send his child to Beijing University, Mao Chun Hua helped by personally contributing toward his child’s tuition. “I said to him, ‘Nu Skin has taught me to be a good person and to lend a hand to those in need of help,’” says Mao Chun Hua. This act on her part convinced her customer to become a Nu Skin sales representative so he could also serve as a force for good.

Although Mao Chun Hua has fulfilled many of her dreams, she continues to work hard on her Nu Skin career. She knows her belief in her ability to be successful helped to get her where she is today. She also feels that her biggest accomplishments are helping others reach their visions of success. “My mission is to try to do my best to help more people achieve their dreams,” she says.

[i] Honorary Executive Director is a unique title to Greater China, recognizing people who have donated at least Rmb100,000 yearly to the Nu Skin Greater China Children Heart Fund, one of the Force for Good projects in Greater China.
The Benefits of Being Happy
Everyone has been “Happy” this year with the hit song from Pharrell continuing to top the music charts around the globe. Here are three tips to help you stay focused and become more productive.

1. Prioritize your task list by time duration. Many people prioritize their task lists by importance, but have you ever prioritized your list by the amount of time it would take to complete each task? Many times a difficult task may take a whole day or several days to complete. Difficult tasks take up a large amount of time leaving little or no time to complete anything else. Try estimating how long each task could take to complete and write the time next to your task. When you have a free moment in your day see which tasks you can complete within that time frame. You may be able to complete four 30 minute tasks spread throughout your day and leave the large chunks of time for the larger tasks.

2. Eliminate distractions. Shut your door or use a “Do not disturb” or “On deadline” sign to eliminate distractions from others. Get rid of digital distractions by turning off the TV, closing your email and setting your phone on airplane mode. By focusing on the task at hand you may be able to accomplish difficult tasks much sooner.

3. Get comfortable. People tend to focus on tasks differently. Find what helps you focus. Maybe it is with music, or in silence. Some people are productive while dressed in pajamas, while others need to be dressed up. Find out also where you are most productive. One of these is a 74-year-old woman who routinely purchased two boxes of LifePak. Each month Kayo would go to the woman’s home to deliver the products. The customer seemed to be quite stern, so Kayo always just handed her the LifePak in a businesslike manner. However, Kayo wanted to build a closer relationship with her and share the force for good values of Nu Skin. Since Kayo believed wholeheartedly in the quality and efficacy of Nu Skin’s products, she decided to give the woman product samples to try. The woman also reminded Kayo of her own mother who lived by herself far away. This reinforced Kayo’s desire to get to know the woman better. Plus, Kayo wanted to see her smile more, so she began bringing her small gifts such as a letter, flowers or a souvenir she had bought while traveling.

The Importance of Focusing on Each Person’s Needs

Looking back on those days, Kayo realizes that even though her meetings with the woman were brief—only five minutes at a time—she was able to provide the woman with a sincere desire to improve her life as well as develop a stronger relationship between the two of them. After six months, the woman invited Kayo to have a cup of tea with her. Then she pointed to the Galvanic Spa and said, “This device is very good, isn’t it? I want to buy it.” This surprised Kayo, since the woman had said she washed her face with soap and wore no makeup. “Based on my previous experiences, I had an assumption that she was not interested in cosmetics,” says Kayo. “When I had tried to promote aesthetic products to my mother and others in her generation, they had not been so enthusiastic about those products. Of course, experiences can be useful, but this incident made me realize that when we meet someone, we need to focus on the person in front of us and dedicate ourselves to finding out what we can do for that particular person.”

Over time, the woman began to show interest in other skincare products. “Using different products one by one,” says Kayo, “she is getting more and more beautiful. I’m happy to see her smile more often. I’ve learned from her how wonderful it is to ‘become beautiful from the inside as well as from the outside.’”

Kayo and the woman are now close friends and go out together, and Kayo has gotten to know the woman’s sister and daughters as well. “Though it took some time, I’ve fostered a great relationship with her,” Kayo says. This experience has taught Kayo how important it is to foster personal bonds one by one, always to share the long-lasting rewards Nu Skin offers, and to use her belief in the quality of Nu Skin’s products to help improve people’s lives.
Find Success by Trying Something New
Do you ever find yourself following the same process or using the same solution simply because it’s the way you’ve always done it? But what if there was a better, more efficient solution? Performing repetitious activities not only becomes mundane, but it may possibly hinder you from finding greater success. How would you know if a better solution existed if you didn’t try it out? Here are three reasons to try something new.

1. Challenge your skills and abilities. By trying something new, you may challenge what you already know. For example, if you’re used to networking with people at a coffee shop, try meeting people throughout your day. It may be a challenge to talk to people wherever you are, but you can find new opportunities. You can also learn new skills, which will help you be successful in other aspects of your life.

2. Spark Innovation. In a fast changing world, innovative ideas are essential to success. Trying something new may help you develop a more efficient way of doing something or identify other processes that need revamping. Helping someone on your team discover a new process or idea may spark something new for another team member or group.

3. You can always go back. If you realize that your new activity is less efficient or creates additional road blocks, then simply adjust it a little or return to your former process. Anything you gained or learned from your new activity can be applied to what you already know and may help in future situations.

As you try something new one time, it will be easier to do it a second time. Soon you will instinctively always be looking for new ideas and methods that will help you be more successful..
Share Great Success with Others
So Hyun Eom got acquainted with Nu Skin when she became a customer. They have a group meeting once a month, and they also focus on one-on-one presentations. She lets her team members know that she trusts them as she helps them to imagine the futures they want to create for themselves and their families. “I have them imagine standing on a stage and participating in the success trip,” she says. This exercise has helped three members of her team earn a recent success trip to Hawaii.

Mrs. Eom also believes it is important to win others’ hearts if you want to grow a team. She travels frequently to visit with her team members, and tries to establish pleasant memories for them by creating an atmosphere where they can relax, enjoy delicious food, and focus on what they like the most and are good at accomplishing. “I make people dream by instilling confidence in their success and by creating a blueprint for the future,” she says.

The true meaning of success to Mrs. Eom is having the entire group reach their goals. And she credits her team for helping her attain the success she now enjoys. She stays motivated by thinking about her downline, and feels she grows stronger as she works hard to help them fulfill their dreams. In fact, one of her biggest dreams is to reach the point of “sharing great success with others,” and she is committed to reaching this goal.
5 Ways to Jump Start Your Business
Has your business slowed down with the holidays? She had just returned from the Team Elite Trip to Paris, and her charisma and energy were evident to everyone in the room. For Wang Jen Mei, this newest achievement reinforced her belief that anyone who has a powerful “why” and works hard with integrity and passion can become a successful Nu Skin distributor. She knew this to be true because she had once been an unemployed housewife and mother faced with financial ruin.

Wang Jen Mei grew up rarely seeing her father, since he was forced to devote his time to running the family’s chemical raw materials business. The oldest of five children, she vowed never to marry a businessman because she knew the hardships involved with running a business. She married in her mid-twenties, and after the birth of her first child, she enjoyed her role as a housewife and mother. When she was expecting her second child, her life suddenly changed when her family’s financial situation suffered a serious blow, destroying her happiness and dreams for the future.

Wang Jen Mei was introduced to Nu Skin by a friend who suggested the business might provide her with a source of income. She attended a presentation and was impressed by the presenter’s joyful attitude and the financial success he was enjoying as a Nu Skin distributor. She couldn’t believe that someone could be so happy and passionate about his career after 10 years in the business—a situation very unlike what her father had experienced. For Wang Jen Mei, Nu Skin seemed to be the opportunity she needed to change her and her family’s difficult situation. Excited, she enrolled as a distributor, only to begin doubting herself due to her lack of social connections and money. However, she remembered a time when she tried to give her father money on the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year. He gently refused it, telling her she needed money more than he did right then. She was ashamed, feeling as if she had not fulfilled her filial duties since she was causing her parents to worry about her. This memory inspired her to do well with her new business.

Her True Motivation

Wang Jen Mei’s children were her real motivators for building her business since she wanted to give them a happy and comfortable life filled with opportunities. She made a list of potential prospects and after 30 minutes could only come up with eight—four of whom were her siblings. She was afraid to call people in the beginning, but her “why” forced her to make those calls. She was very honest with those she approached, telling them she was a bit scared, needed their support, and how much she liked Nu Skin’s products and that she wanted to share her experience. People responded to her heartfelt message, and five of her eight prospects became part of her team. She was fully committed to her goals, and could often be seen riding her motorcycle with her 3-year-old son on the small front seat and Nu Skin products in the front basket. Sometimes, she took an early bus to Taichung or Hualien to meet with prospects. When it was too late to go back home, she stayed at her downline’s home. “I knew this was my best chance,” says Wang Jen Mei. “I had to grasp it.”

Seven months after joining Nu Skin, her daughter was born. Because she was devoted to building her Nu Skin business, she often had to leave her baby with others. It tortured her to leave home without her infant daughter, which motivated her to work even harder. “I have to be successful as soon as possible so that I will have time to be with my children,” she says she told herself in those early days. In fact, she credits her daughter with inspiring her to reach Team Elite Executive status when her daughter asked, “Mom, can you take me to travel around the world by achieving Team Elite?” She managed to fulfill her daughter’s request as well as become a Million Dollar Circle Member[i].

A Challenge She Could Not Refuse

Always driven by new goals, in 2010 Wang Jen Mei was encouraged by the company to reach Team Elite Platinum. It took her all of 10 minutes to accept the challenge, and she quickly spent a lot of time communicating with her organization to establish a positive atmosphere and to encourage them to join her in reaching this goal. She views her success in qualifying for company incentive trips to be a joyful way of motivating her team members to reach similar goals. Thanks to her hard work and her continued support for her team, in addition to reaching 4 Star Team Elite Platinum for two consecutive years, she has been able to help her business partners fulfill their dreams and improve the quality of life for their families.

Wang Jen Mei treats her business partners like members of her family. When a team member who is a single mother could not participate in evening home meetings because she had to work overtime, Wang Jen Mei got up early and held morning meetings. She never took a break and was never late for these 9 a.m. meetings, which she held three days a week. Thanks to her diligence, participation grew to over 50, and her team’s volumes also increased significantly.

Wang Jen Mei’s early struggles as a young mother who worked hard to build her business has helped transform her into a passionate and influential leader. Today, her goals have changed—now she wants to help people in need. And after 20 years with Nu Skin, Wang Jen Mei says the happiest thing about her life is providing the same opportunity to others as she had many years ago. Through leading by example, she lets everyone know that when dreams align with determination, nothing is impossible. Thanks to her constant encouragement and support, her business partners have achieved impressive results, a fact that is a great source of pride for Wang Jen Mei. “The power of dreams brings a sense of happiness,” she says. And it is this belief that keeps her constantly moving forward with unbridled passion.

[i] Million Dollar Circle Members are distributors who have earned over one-million dollars in commissions over the lifetime of their Nu Skin distributorship. In 2012 the average commission paid to U.S. Active Distributors was $133.92 monthly ($1,607.04 annualized). Socializing with the same people prevents you from thinking outside the box. Converse with people who are outside your circle of friends, and it will help spark conversation that may lead to new ideas. Seeing things from someone else’s perspective leads to new ways of thinking.

3. Read more books. There is much to learn from both fiction and non-fiction books. Reading frequently will keep your brain engaged and open to new ideas. Vary the types of books you read to keep ideas flowing.

4. Randomly surf the web. Surfing the web helps you gather ideas from those not only physically around you but from around the globe. Seeing what is happening half way around the world might help you with a solution in your back yard.

5. Clear your thoughts. Find a time to meditate and clear your brain from everyday thoughts which may clutter idea creation. Clear your thoughts so your brain is able to foster new ideas. Allow your brain to wander from thought to thought, and try not to focus on the task at hand.

Implementing these steps may take some work and patience. But by doing so, you’ll foster a great atmosphere for generating new ideas.
Communicating Socially
As communication methods evolve with technology connecting and communicating with your team can prove to be challenging. Convey gratitude thoughtfully and sincerely. “I really love your contributions.” “I want to recognize how hard everyone is working and say thank you.” “How can we better serve the team? We want to make sure you keep up the great work.”

One last tip, and maybe the most important, is that even though you are communicating in a social, relational way, your messages do not need to be limited to 140 characters or less. Mikael Linder, President of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, knows that it often takes a combination of success drivers, along with hard work, for people to change their lives as they grow a strong organization.

Nu Skin itself has changed a great deal over the years, and new distributors today are blessed with a sound infrastructure, experienced management, proven training materials and a wide array of high quality products that are easy to order and receive—wherever in the world Nu Skin does business. In the company’s early days, however, individuals who saw the potential in Nu Skin’s business model and believed in the quality of the products did not have all of these tools available to them. These Nu Skin “pioneers” often had to build their organizations by primarily relying on a strong belief system and by setting and staying focused on clear goals.

One pioneering couple stands out in Mikael’s mind. “This couple more or less established Nu Skin in Europe,” he says. “They just had to trust a person who came over from the United States who said ‘Everything is ok.’” The first step for this couple was to believe that the company and the products were as good as others said they were. And although confident in the power of this new opportunity and product line, they also minimized their risk. The couple decided that initially the husband would be the one who shared Nu Skin with others, and the wife would keep her full-time position that she held at the time.

Clear Goals Drove Their Growth

Their goal was for the husband to eventually earn enough in Nu Skin commissions to permit both of them to devote their full-time efforts toward building the business. With this first goal clearly in mind, the couple felt comfortable pursuing their ultimate goal of creating a large and successful Nu Skin organization throughout Europe. “I would say this is an amazing success story because this couple dared to take a step to do this, they set their goals and then actually were able to achieve exactly what they expected … probably over what they expected,” says Mikael.

To share Nu Skin with others, the husband transported the products to different parts of Europe in the trunk of his car. He worked during the day doing presentations, and at night he met with more people wherever he could and sent out products so he could promote the Nu Skin brand. Because Nu Skin had not yet evolved into its current international stature, the man was on his own when it came to convincing people the company offered a rewarding opportunity as well as products that offered real results. Through this combination of an unwavering belief in both the business and the products and by setting and meeting very clear goals, this couple created an organization of distributors and customers that has grown into a large and highly successful market today.

“Their belief got stronger as they moved forward and upward and
began to see the people they had introduced to Nu Skin develop as
leaders themselves.”
—Mikael Linder, President of Europe, the Middle East and Africa

Mikael Linder joined Nu Skin as Nordic General Manager in 2001 and was promoted to President of the European Region in March 2006. Since then, the region has expanded to cover Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and it now covers more than half of Nu Skin’s geographical markets.
Too Busy? Burned Out? Sweaty palms, a dry mouth, and an anxious tapping of your right foot - all signs of nervousness many experience before speaking to large crowds. Some may even experience these signs when having interpersonal communications. The good news is that whether speaking to one person or a multitude, there are ways to improve your public speaking skills. Here are four ”Be”s that can improve your public speaking.

1. Be prepared. Prepare as much as you can before you even begin your speech or conversations. Do your research and become as knowledgeable as possible on the topic you are covering. Plan ahead and take as much time needed beforehand because once you begin, the time to prepare has ended.

2. Be confident. Now that you are a master of your topic, be confident that you can answer any question thrown your way. If you are posed with a question to which you do not know the answer, do not make something up. Confidently reply with what you do know and state that you will look into the matter further. Show your confidence by making eye contact, and speaking in a strong voice. Some of the best public speakers videotape themselves and pay attention to those nervous actions they would have never noticed. You can do it!

3. Be personable. Adding personal stories increases interest and allows your audience to better relate to you. Stick to a few key points, and mix in examples from experiences in your own life. It will drive home the point you are trying to make and allow you to connect with your audience.

4. Be convincing. Make sure you have a purpose in what you say. Tell your audience what your purpose is in the beginning and conclude with a call to action. Stating your purpose in the beginning will allow your audience to follow along with you on the journey of your speech; while ending with a call to action invites them to act on the information you shared.

Finally, as with most skills, the more you do it the better you become. Follow these four “Be”s and with practice, you can improve your public speaking skills.

Let's talk about it: What tips do you have to be a better public speaker?
5 Keys to Strengthening Customer and New Sales Team Member Relationships
Establishing a mutually-beneficial relationship with your customers and sales team members creates a path for future sales success and business longevity. That’s because everyone has his or her own specific dream and vision of success. However, Nu Skin cofounder Blake Roney believes there are some key elements of success that all distributors should keep in mind as they begin building their businesses.

First, Blake is a big proponent of imitating someone you truly admire—an individual whose life and actions really resonate with you. “You have to look around for role models, and figure out who seems to be living the life you want to live,” he says. “And then you just start doing everything the way that person would do it,” he says. “So, self-development to me is picking who you want to be, and then acting like that person now, not hoping to become that person. Over time, you become the person you want to be.”

While you’re working on becoming the person you envision becoming, Blake advises that distributors make sure they’re having fun as they build their businesses. “Our most successful distributors enjoy themselves almost every minute,” he says. “The things that most people view as really difficult, these people have adjusted in such a way so that these tasks fit with their personality and in the way they work.” Blake not only talks about the importance of having fun, he lives it. Every Halloween he and the other founders and executives don zany costumes (and encourage employees to do the same), and he’s even appeared on stage at the global convention in Salt Lake City dressed as a sumo wrestler. He wholeheartedly believes those who achieve their goals tackle even tough challenges with a positive mind-set. “[Successful distributors] don’t wake up and say, ‘Oh, I don’t know how much longer I can do this!’ They wake up and say, ‘My job’s fun! I do hard work, but I find a way to make it fun.’”

Creating Balance and Never Sacrificing Your Values

Blake also feels balance is another key to success in any endeavor, especially when it comes to building a rewarding Nu Skin business. “Successful people are people who can design their life in such a way that they’re enjoying themselves as they go,” he states. “They have some level of balance. Rather than sacrificing their family, they’re building their family.”

Hand in hand with balance comes never sacrificing your personal values for success. “If you trade any of your values or any other valuable element in life for success, you’re making a tragic mistake,” Blake says. Over the years, Blake has observed lots of people build successful Nu Skin businesses—an experience he says is a good education for evaluating the different kinds of success people have created. “People who have sacrificed everything for financial success and ‘arrived,’ so to speak, have arrived at a miserable place.” People who have remained true to their personal values and family relationships end up with a different experience, according to Blake. “The success they enjoy is so much more delicious and wonderful than the sad success we see in [those who sacrificed everything].”

For Blake, true success comes when your work matches your values and your passion—and when you’re really enjoying what you’re doing every day. If your efforts don’t contribute to what is important to you, Blake believes you’ll be traveling a dead-end course. “You’re going to fail or just be miserable, one of the two,” he says. “Your passion has to come from your values. You have to figure out what’s really important to you in life. And then pack that into the business.” As far as Blake’s concerned, if you don’t, you won’t have the drive to push beyond the mark and make it to the finish line.

“If you’re just working for money and that doesn’t happen to be the thing that’s
most important to you in the world, and I hope it isn’t, you’re not going to have
the success you need.”

This is particularly true in the direct selling industry where utilizing your connections is paramount. Here are five ways to network better:

Create meaningful connections. Even with those who may not benefit you right away. You never know who, down the line will be a valuable connection. The way we connect is changing. What was once thought of six degrees of separation has now decreased to four with the use of social media1. Make sure to get to know – really know – people.

Be a resource. Ask, “What can I do to help this person?” Creating meaningful connections takes work. Don’t let a sales pitch be your first interaction. Find out more about who you are talking to, and determine how you can help them. You might provide them with a valuable resource, or connection to help them in their business. Do this, and instead of having to approach others, others will approach you.

Do what works best. If you attend large networking meetings, but big groups are not your thing, you are at the wrong place. Some people are more comfortable talking to individuals at the grocery store, in their own homes or along the street. Find what you are most comfortable with and do it. You will come off more relaxed and the conversation will be less forced.

Focus. Seek out those connections that are reciprocating. If someone is not interested, you’ll be able to tell. Constantly trying to connect with them will frustrate you, and annoy them. Don’t spend valuable time on someone who either is not ready, or does not see value in the connection. Focus your time on those who value your connection as much as you do.

Follow up. Follow up. Follow up. Networking is only worthwhile if you follow up. As she grew up, she dreamed of becoming very successful—a goal that supported the advice her father gave her when she was little: “When you are successful, you can have the best life has to offer.” Since that time, Angela has put all of her effort into each of her professional endeavors because she has always been determined to design her own life.

Her professional career began when she became a fashion store sales clerk—a position she viewed as a springboard to becoming store manager before she was 21. She worked a “one salary, four-fold workload” schedule, doing everything from cleaning the store early in the morning to performing odd jobs for her boss at the factory, and she never went home before 9 p.m. Within a year, she had reached her goal and was named store manager at the age of 20.

Angela went on to become very successful in the garment industry—she eventually owned three garment factories—but she was ready to diversify her professional interests. With encouragement by Rayne Ho, her current business partner, Angela became a Nu Skin distributor.

Focus Is the Key to Success

Focus is extremely important to success, whether in a traditional business or in direct selling. Angela feels her extraordinary success as a Nu Skin distributor is the result of her constant concentration on her Nu Skin business, particularly her commitment to taking positive action every day. She believes when people let their fears and doubts become more important than their goals, they will have trouble succeeding. “The result lies where the focus is,” she says. “When you focus on the problem, you will get the problem. On the other hand, when you focus on the result, you’ll get the result.” Angela feels that a healthy mindset about what you want to achieve is crucial to any distributor’s success.

Adversity can be found in any business, and Angela feels challenges can be compounded by people’s responses to those challenges. For her, life experiences happen for a reason, and it is how you deal with these events that shape who you are as a person and the success you will ultimately enjoy. “I believe there is a reason behind every happening, and the result of every happening must be beneficial to me,” she says. She views these experiences as useful sooner or later, and the final beneficiary is the one who experienced it.

Angela’s focus has served her well. She and her business partner, Rayne Ho, have now become Nu Skin 20 Million Dollar Circle Members[i].

Angela Liew and Rayne Ho

Real Success Comes From Helping Others Succeed

In addition to the many financial rewards Angela has enjoyed because of her Nu Skin business, Angela knows that Nu Skin has also benefited her as a person. As a boss, she had a short temper due to the many pressures she faced—stress that concerned her since she remembers her father frequently losing his temper, suffering from high blood pressure in his 50s, and eventually passing away from heart disease. “I often feel, without Nu Skin, my situation would have been very miserable now,” she says. Today, her ability to focus on helping others reach their goals has enabled her to stay calm, and she keeps the force for good mission of improving lives consistently in the forefront of her mind. Before beginning her Nu Skin business, Angela faced constant competition in her other professions. However, once she joined Nu Skin and focused on helping other people instead of dwelling on what she wanted, the pressure in her life disappeared.

The Bigger the Dream, the Smaller the Difficulty

Angela has learned that when her dreams are bigger, her problems seem to become smaller. When she runs into a problem today, she quickly adjusts her attitude to face it. “As Charles R. Swindoll said, ‘Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it,’” says Angela. “The difference lies between one thought and another.” She has kept her laser focus throughout her life, and says she spared no effort in reaching her goals because she did not want to feel sorry for herself in the future. “You can never deceive yourself,” she says. “You are the one who knows best whether you have done your best or not.” She views both success and failure as habits, and when you make success a habit, you can be successful in anything. “Every time you fulfill one of your goals, you should think about what else you can do to get even better results,” she advises.

As Angela continues to grow her business around the world, she retains her focus on helping others enjoy the rewards she and Rayne have earned throughout their distributorship. And when asked to name her current dream, she answers quickly and with a smile: “Helping Nu Skin to become the number one direct selling company in the world.”

To read more Success Stories, visit The Success Formula at: www.nsemindset.com

[i] Twenty Million Dollar Circle Member refers to those independent distributors who are members of the 20 Million Dollar Circle having earned over 20 million dollars in commissions over the life of their involvement with Nu Skin. If you have too many things to think about, you’ll get to the superficial solution, not the brilliant one.”

2. Embrace accidents – Take advantage of those opportunities when you accidentally run into people. You don’t have to approach those around you with a business pitch right away, but make sure to make meaningful connections. Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos said, ”I think you can create your own luck. The key is to meet as many people as you can and really get to know them….without trying to extract value from them. You don’t need to connect the dots right away.”

3. Fail – Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post, said, “I don’t mean you have to try to fail. That will take care of itself. A key component of whatever successes I’ve had has been what I’ve learned from my failures.” When we fail, we learn what it takes to not fail. The important part is getting back up and trying again.

4. Emphasize steady progress – In a study of 238 professionals, Harvard Business School Professor, Teresa Amabile found that people were more motivated on days that they were able to move forward in their work, even if it was just a small incremental step. Make sure to celebrate those little wins.

5. Stop thinking about yourself – Decisions need to be made for the betterment of everyone. John Mackey, co-founder of Whole Foods, said “whenever we make a decision, we want it to work for all stakeholders – employees, customers, investors, suppliers, the community and the environment. If it doesn’t, we go back to the drawing board.” Think about how someone else can benefit from a new opportunity.

These lessons, and many more, are echoed in The Success Formula. What the company founders initially lacked in start-up business skills, they more than made up for with their passion to provide products and an opportunity that had the potential to greatly benefit people’s lives. Supporting this vision was a razor-sharp focus on clear goals about what it would take to make this new venture successful.

Steve Lund, Executive Chairman of the Board, remembers that the original business plan was a work in progress from the first hour. “We didn’t have a fully developed business plan when we started the business,” he says. “The business started with cool products—products for which there was a demand. That was the first part of the business plan.”

Next, the young entrepreneurs focused on how to sell these products. They put together a rewarding compensation plan that would attract a motivated sales force.

The third question they had to answer was how to create an actual business plan to introduce the product line and business model into the marketplace. “Once questions A and B were answered—the products and how to market them—the horse was out of the gate and we had to backfill the business plan,” Steve remembers.

One important lesson the founders learned was that their business strategy really came down to understanding and providing solutions to real problems. They focused on each problem that arose and found ways to overcome them.

Steve has learned that building a business requires focus on specific steps to reach specific goals. “Coming up with a to-do list is huge,” he says. “For example, telling yourself, 'Here are my priorities…these are the things that I need to do the next time I have an hour to devote to the business.'” In other words, Steve believes, success requires you to focus on and define what you want, and then determine what you need to do right now to move closer to that objective. If you don’t focus on the steps designed to move you forward, you can become paralyzed by indecision and uncertainty about what you should be doing.

“Focus is necessary to be successful in anything. When we decide on a horse that we’re going to ride, we need to give that horse the attention it needs to get to the end of the journey. If we’re constantly getting off and trying out other horses, we find ourselves at the end of the day having worked real hard, but we’re still in the corral.”

For her, that was the only belief in her mind at the time.

And it was her dreams that kept her moving forward and working hard. She didn’t let hardships of the past get in her way—as a young girl she had to leave high school when her father became ill to work as a street vendor to help support her family. Later, she spent her days at home. She had no marketable skills, and many thought Xu Hong was destined to live a quiet life and never accomplish anything. However, Xu Hong had other ideas. When she found Nu Skin she decided to give up her idle lifestyle and redesign her life. Her goal was to travel the world with her loved ones with no worries about the time she spent away from home or the demands of a job.

Within six months of joining Nu Skin, and despite numerous challenges, Xu Hong achieved considerable success. She continued to work hard to build her Nu Skin business, wanting to impress her brother, Xu Dong, who had been a top student at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing and then a brand manager at one of the world’s top 500 companies. Xu Hong knew she had to prove herself to her entire family, especially Xu Dong, and had to earn as much as her brother to convince him she could be successful.

Xu Hong’s persistence and effort paid off, because in 2004 Xu Dong and his wife, a successful financial analyst, left their well-established jobs to join Xu Hong in her Nu Skin business. Their involvement in her business confirmed to Xu Hong the potential Nu Skin offered all of them as entrepreneurs. Today, Xu Hong and Xu Dong’s team continually demonstrates top performance and has become a role model for other Nu Skin sales partners.

Dreams Do Come True—Xu Hong is Living Proof

Although Xu Hong continued to build her business and earn new rewards, she knew that sharing her successs and wonderful life with someone would make her much happier. Thanks to her donations and involvement in the Nu Skin Force for Good projects in China, she met an orphan—a one-year-old girl with whom she instantly bonded. She adopted the little girl and decided to give the little girl all the love she had. Next, Xu Hong decided to find a husband to complete her family. Through her Nu Skin partners, she was introduced to a successful businessman from Palm Beach, Florida. A year later, he traveled to Nu Skin’s global convention to meet this dynamic woman who dared to dream big, and he was soon captivated by Nu Skin’s force for good culture as well as by Xu Hong. Eventually, he moved to China to create a new life with Xu Hong and her daughter.

Xu Hong knows firsthand the power of dreams. Her success has given her enormous self-confidence, and she has brought glory and honor to her parents through her many accomplishments. She’s been able to take her mother on some of the company reward trips, giving her the chance to travel to places she never imagined visiting. Xu Hong and Xu Dong now have a bigger dream: to help even more people find the same sense of happiness and security they now enjoy. “For many people, money is not what they are short of—what they need is a higher sense of happiness,” says Xu Hong. “I really hope that through Nu Skin, people can find this kind of wonderful feeling that I am now enjoying.” Xu Hong’s happiness is bound to increase as her business grows, because she knows she and Xu Dong have the ability to help people, and that is what makes them really happy.

Read More Success Stories by visiting www.nsemindset.com.
7 Ways To Be More Productive
With the dawn of a new year comes an increased focus on self-improvement. We create resolutions and goals that help us become better people – laugh more, lose a few pounds, spend more time with family. We all want to accomplish more, but sometimes we need a little help refocusing ourselves. Here are a few ideas that may help increase your productivity:

1. Know yourself. Some people work better in the mornings, while others are night owls. Figure out when you are the most productive and make sure to schedule your tasks appropriately.

2. Hardest things first. It may be easier to tackle harder projects first while your mind is fresh. Once the harder projects are finished it will be easier to accomplish your remaining tasks.

3. One bite at a time. Even the smallest project can be split into manageable pieces. Segment your task and complete it segment by segment

4. Develop a process. Take some time to think about the process of completing a task. What steps do you take? Which can be eliminated? Is there an easier way to complete your task? Developing a process may take significant time now but can pay off by making it easier to accomplish the task a second time around.

5. Eliminate distractions. When working on a project that requires your full attention, don’t multi-task. Limit interruptions and focus on the task at hand.

6. Prepare to work. Sometimes all it takes is the right mindset. Before you begin your tasks, think about what you want to accomplish, how long it will take you, and how you will get there. Don’t forget the satisfaction you’ll be rewarded when you complete your tasks.

And when all else fails,

7. Just start. Momentum can carry things a long way, this includes tasks and projects. One of the biggest obstacles in completing a project is starting the project. Once you’ve started, take it step by step.

As you finish each project on your list, you will feel great satisfaction as you move closer to achieving your 2013 goals.

Have tips on being more productive? You’re worried about people talking and/or playing on their cell phones during your presentation – or worse yet, hearing snores.

Don’t worry. By using the following tips and techniques, you can make even a presentation about civil service reform interesting:

1. Start by stating a fact that is amusing, remarkable, or troubling: A great opening “hook” statement will engage your audience from the get-go.

2. Ask powerful questions: One great way to keep audience focus is to ask a provocative rhetorical question – one that doesn’t require them to answer, but that forces them to think. If you’d like, you can even ask for a volunteer to respond.

3. Share personal experiences: One of the best ways to teach others is through your own experiences. By sharing a personal experience, you will help your audience relate to you and help them understand what you’re trying to teach.

4. Relate to a recent event: Make your presentation timely and current by relating it to a recent current event. It is also helpful to point out something important about the particular group or setting of your presentation.

5. Ask for examples: Rather than just providing your own examples, ask the audience for a volunteer to share some examples or experiences. It’s likely someone will have an example that will capture the point you’re trying to make. Let your audience be your partner in learning by encouraging interaction. This way, it will make it seem more like you are talking with them than to them.

6. Guided imagery: Take your audience members on a journey in their minds and make the journey as vivid as possible by describing a scene or character. They could travel in time or space, depending on your purpose.

7. Acknowledge: When group members participate in the discussion, make sure to acknowledge their contributions and build on them. This will encourage others to participate as well.

8. Include visuals: Show a compelling visual image or provide graphs and tables to help your audience learn. A short video can also do the trick.

9. Tell a humorous story: Everyone enjoys humour and by providing a funny anecdote or observation, you will make the presentation more light-hearted and entertaining.

10. Tell listeners why they should care: Make sure to explain how the product or new knowledge will help them in their current situations. Let them know what is at stake for them.

At the end of your presentation, summarise the important points and refocus. Reiterate your purpose and arguments and remind your audience what is important for them to take away from your presentation. For your closing remarks, you can use another “hook” phrase (like you did in the beginning) or provide a call to action or challenge for your audience.

What tips do you use to engage your audience?
