A Worthwhile Pursuit

Success comes to people in different ways, at different times, and is fueled by many different variables. Malaysia’s Chaw Ching Wah and Yong Siew Lan’s successful journey as Nu Skin distributors certainly was not handed to them on a platter. It took hard work and perseverance to acquire customers and team members. Success with Nu Skin wasn’t Ching Wah’s priority when he first learned about the company. Like many wonderful opportunities that shape people’s lives, Ching Wah’s interest in Nu Skin took time to develop. And his and Siew Lan’s story is one that encompasses all facets of The Success Formula—from dreaming about the life they wanted, to setting goals, believing they could reach them, taking consistent action, and skilfully leading their team to its own success.

 

Ching Wah was an IT man with over 10 years’ experience in the industry. When two friends encouraged him to start a software company with them in 2002, he considered the venture, but decided not to get involved—a decision that would eventually prove to be wise.

Ching Wah was familiar with Nu Skin since his wife, Siew Lan, had already joined the company and they had both been using the products for some time. He had previously had a bad experience with another direct sales company and initially had no interest in joining Siew Lan in her Nu Skin business. Then he began to see the opportunity Nu Skin offered to build a global business—something that had always been a dream of his. Keeping his job at a software company, he began to work Nu Skin part-time.

 

Ching Wah was a key IT consultant specializing in banking and financial issues. There were times he had to sleep at the site to make sure the problem was solved. He realized this kind of dedication was expected of him, but given that he never received recognition for his time and commitment, he felt unappreciated. As he became more familiar with Nu Skin, he discovered that he was always rewarded for his effort, and he liked that. Attaining the success the couple wanted was not easy, however. They faced harsh criticism from their family and friends (many of whom are now customers); Ching Wah says he was especially hurt by some comments his best friend made. “Now I really want to thank him, because it gave me a strong desire to prove that I had made the right decision,” says Ching Wah. “It became my driving force to succeed with Nu Skin.”

Starting Over by Focusing on Customers

 

At one point, the couple also found themselves completely starting over when they lost all their key builders. Since they still had customers and had made promises to many people, they decided to rebuild their business by acquiring many customers—action they still maintain by focusing on helping people support their health and gain confidence by using the products. They have always liked the fact Nu Skin is a leader in product development. They’re confident Nu Skin will remain at the forefront of innovative trends, unlike some companies that have a hot product today and nothing new to offer tomorrow. And, thanks to the products’ superior quality, Ching Wah and Siew Lan have complete confidence sharing the products with others—what they say has “made their mission a worthwhile pursuit.”

 

As Ching Wah began to see results with his and Siew Lan’s Nu Skin business, he realized it could lead him toward his goal of obtaining both time and financial freedom. And once he had a clear vision in place, he knew Nu Skin was the career that could give him and Siew Lan everything they wanted in life, especially the pride of their children. This, says Ching Wah, is his biggest reason for continuing to build their business.

Positive Focus is Critical

 

Today the couple continues to focus on new goals and work toward leaving a legacy for their children while helping their team members reach their own objectives. “Life becomes valuable when we achieve success and help others succeed along the way,” says the couple. Success requires consistent, positive focus and gratitude, they believe. “To become a Blue Diamond Executive, we only need to focus on our goals,” says the couple. “However, some people tend to focus on the problems, and they ride on the emotional rollercoaster and, therefore, do not achieve anything great. Being grateful will bestow great power, but whining spreads like a virus and will only bring undesirable results.”

 

When necessary, Siew Lan and Ching Wah help their team members refocus their goals. “Maybe their goal is too wide, so we show them how to narrow their goals and then continue to set higher goals,” they explain. “Many times we align a goal with a sense of urgency, such as the person’s success must be faster than how quickly his or her parents age.”

 

One thing Ching Wah has no doubts about is that decision he made in 2002 not to be part of a software start-up. Many of his friends in the industry suffered financially during the economic crisis of 2007. However, he and Siew Lan have continued to succeed thanks to their Nu Skin business, a venture that has given them a leveraged income and a stable, rewarding lifestyle. And they plan to continue successfully building their business as they add customers and team members. “We will continue to walk this path to realize all the best values—truth, compassion, and beauty,” the couple says. ■
