Recently, nutritional supplements have been receiving a considerable amount of coverage in the media. Since the National Center for Health Statistics released their study showing a significant spike in supplement use by adults in the U.S., a number of news outlets have shown interest in the industry.

In an article titled “Dietary Supplement Use Keeps Rising, Federal Survey Shows,” the Washington Post cited the National Center for Health Statistics’ survey and reported that the percentage of U.S. adults who take supplements increased from 42 percent to 50 percent in the last decade.

USAToday also referenced the study in an article titled “More Than Half of U.S. Adults Over 20 Take Vitamins.” In the article, Jaime Gahche, a nutritional researcher with the National Center for Health Statistics, was interviewed and shared that “the majority of dietary supplement users report using them every day.”

Other findings reported in the article by USAToday include:

· 61% of women age 60 and older take a supplement containing calcium.

· A substantial number of adult women (44%) and men (35%) are taking supplements that contain vitamin D, which is critical for bone health.

· In 2006, 34% of women age 20 to 39 reported taking a supplement containing folic acid, which is critical for women of childbearing age to prevent neural tube defects.
