Joan Akita: How One Phone Call Changed Her Life


Joan Akita credits a simple phone call from a friend for drastically changing the direction of her life.

When Team Elite member and friend of 26 years, Alan Nagao, called Joan and told her she had to take a look at the new Galvanic Spa, she decided to give it a try.

“I knew that he had a really good head for business,” she said. “So I wanted to take a look at it.”

Before the call, Joan had been laid off of her mortgage job of seven years and was looking for a change of pace in her life.

Originally from Honolulu, Joan has always been able to recognize a great opportunity when it’s presented to her. After hearing more about the Nu Skin opportunity, she realized that she had been introduced to something exciting.

“I got into real estate back in the late 80’s because I understood it was an opportunity,” she said. “I got into mortgages in the late 90’s because of the opportunities there.”

Staying true to form, Joan recognized Nu Skin’s success in the market and decided not to miss the opportunity.

“The stars were in alignment with this company,” she said. “You couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Joan’s beliefs in personal development are what have made her successful during her two years at Nu Skin. She feels that making a decision and acting upon that decision will help anyone achieve success in the business world and in Nu Skin.

“You have to make that decision that you want to do it, and once you make that decision you have to commit to that decision.”

Shortly after signing up as a Nu Skin distributor, Joan put this approach into practice when she attended her first Kick-Off Meeting and noticed the reserved seating signs for Blue Diamond and Team Elite Executives of the company.

“I took one of the signs home and I put my name on it,” she said. “I put it up on my computer and that was the visual for me that I saw every day. I made a decision and I just constantly took action for it.”

Now a new Blue Diamond Executive, Joan feels that her life has changed for the better since joining the company and feels that she has been blessed by being able to be around the many wonderful people that she interacts with daily.

“I have more fulfillment and more excitement in my life,” she said. “I really feel like I’m making a change in other people’s lives.”
